Job description

Will you join this fantastic charity as their new Chair and lead the way in empowering over 50s across the region?

Fuelled by a vision to promote improved quality of life and empowerment for people aged 50+ and their carers, as Chair of the Board you'll lead a highly-respected charity making a profound impact on the lives of people and communities across Halton, St Helens, Knowsley and Warrington.

Location: Quarterly board meetings will be held in person at either the Mansion House, St Helens or Church Street, Runcorn. Other meetings held virtually.
Time commitment: Estimated at 1 day per month, *see below.
Remuneration: This is a voluntary Trustee position.

About the charity

It's a genuinely exciting and pivotal time to be joining the charity, to build on and develop the high-quality information, advice and support they provide. The charity is financially stable with healthy reserves and has recently appointed a new CEO - the perfect opportunity for a Chair to come onboard and be part of a key milestone in the charity's history.

This charity has a laser-sharp, single focus: to improve quality of life and empower people aged 50 and over. Their ambition is to develop more services, reach out to new client groups and diversify income. To achieve these goals and remain relevant and effective, they'll need to adapt and evolve under the leadership and guidance of a visionary Chair of the Board.

About the role

To achieve the charity's mission and strategic priorities, we'll need a diversely skilled and experienced team of Trustees, who are truly passionate about the rights of all to a healthy later life. The Chair leads the Board, ensuring that it governs the charity in an effective and robust way, in line with its vision and mission and placing over 50s at the heart of every single decision. The Chair will be asked to lead in an inclusive way, supporting the Board to work well together and providing support and challenge to the Chief Executive. The Chair is also a proactive and positive ambassador for the charity.

About you

You'll be able to demonstrate a strong track-record of strategic and values-led leadership, with the ability to work in partnership and collaboration towards shared goals and vision.

Ideally you'll have senior leadership experience within the charity sector or health and social care space. To ensure robust governance is in place, we're looking for either previous experience as a trustee or significant previous exposure and influence at Board level, although not essential to have been a Chair before.

We'll be looking for you to demonstrate the following:

  • Inclusive leadership style: Able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing.
  • Listen and engage effectively: You're comfortable with challenge and debate and able to encourage that in others, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Advocacy: You're able and willing to champion the charity's work through personal networks, social media, and other channels.
  • ED&I: You demonstrate a strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Responsive: as a small charity, things sometimes 'come up' that require the Chair to advise, support or give consent.

*Time Commitment continued:

  • Quarterly board meetings.
  • Monthly scheduled meeting with the CEO with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.
  • Attend board sub-committees as and when required.
  • Attend board development, training and annual strategy day.

If you have the skills and experience to lead with passion, integrity and from a place of inclusion, then we'd love to hear from you and together improve the lives of over 50s across Mid-Mersey.

To apply, please send a copy of your profile or CV in the first instance to Amelia Lee at Charity People to receive a copy of the job pack and application process.

Deadline: Friday 16th February
Interview: Tuesday 5th March (in person at Mansion House), with option for flexibility to suit busy diaries
