Dynamic (hybrid) working: We trust our people to agree, within their teams, where and when they can be most effective. Our Dynamic Working policy allows individuals flexibility around the hours they work and where they work. Typically for this role you will work 3 days per week on-site.

The opportunity:

An opportunity has arisen in the Complex Warhead Centre of Excellence (CW CofEx) for a Chemist, Chemical Engineer or Materials Scientist to be part of the Design Team in Bolton, with the potential to work alongside the Propulsion Team based at Bristol and Materials Group at Stevenage.

This role will involve developing energetic materials, testing and manufacturing solutions to support conceptual and detailed, design, development, and manufacturing programmes across a varied portfolio.  The position will involve working with a multi-disciplined team primarily in UK, and also with colleagues in France, Italy and Germany, customers, partners and suppliers across Europe.

What we're looking for from you:

We recognise that applicants may not have all the attributes described below but would welcome applicants who can demonstrate capability in a number of the areas.  There is no requirement for experience to be in a defence related field and MBDA are willing to consider applicants from other disciplines who are looking to exploit transferrable skills. MBDA support employees to pursue chartership status in industry relevant disciplines.

  • Innovative and self-motivated Chemist, Chemical Engineer or Materials Scientist, ideally educated to Degree level, and typically with relevant post qualification experience in disciplines such as research and development and/or industry and manufacture.
  • Working with suppliers to manage existing and introduce new manufacturing processes for energetic materials
  • Industrial validation of manufacturing processes and quality assurance of energetic materials and devices
  • Analysis of manufacturing data.
  • Familiarity with, and able to apply a wide range of established and new analytical procedures, for example compatibility testing, thermal and mechanical analysis, chromatography and spectroscopy.
  • The ability to work effectively with manufacturers and test facilities.
  • Some appreciation of national and international regulations covering hazardous materials and their compliance against defence standards.
  • Familiarity with REACh legislation, along with the application of obsolescence strategies would be beneficial.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to facilitate and influence technical discussions with stakeholders at all levels across the business and outside.
  • Capability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team.
  • An awareness and understanding of cultural differences with the ability to adapt accordingly.

We are committed to growing and supporting diversity in our workforce and ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to reach their potential.   MBDA is proud of our employee-led networks, examples include: Gender Equality, Pride, Menopause Matters, Parents and Carers, Armed Forces, Ethnic Diversity, Neurodiversity and more…
