Chemistry Degree Apprenticeship

A career that will deliver change. Together, we can help Britain achieve net zero.

Join our Chemistry Technician Degree Apprenticeship and you can make an immediate impact, powering the nation today whilst helping to build a sustainable energy future for tomorrow.

“I decided to take up an Apprenticeship with EDF Energy rather than go to University after school. I’m so glad I did, there’s nothing out there like it.”

Sam, Apprentice

What is the Chemistry Technician Degree Apprenticeship Programme:

During the course of this 4-year Degree Apprenticeship, you’ll learn from our industry-leading experts and gain valuable experience, whilst studying for a BSc Laboratory Scientist Degree. You can expect on-the-job training and the kind of practical experience you simply can't get on campus.

You will become experienced in operating within a chemistry department and learn about Nuclear power plant Chemistry. As well as learning about systems associated with chemistry controls, experience will also be gained on chemical safety, technical governance, Discharge Standards, quality assurance, training schemes, confined spaces and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

You will be responsible for proactively finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving the business. Laboratory technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a laboratory team. They are able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their own work.

What salary and benefits are we offering you?

  • Salary of £21,891 plus excellent benefits
  • 28 days’ annual leave
  • Flexible benefits package
  • Wellbeing, physical and mental health support services
  • Outward Bound programme – team building excursion prior to starting in September
  • A dedicated Early Careers Programme Lead for your scheme, as well as the support of a Line Manager and Buddy

At EDF, everyone’ welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’re committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

If you’re passionate about tackling climate change, our Apprenticeship programme offers you the opportunity to develop an exciting career whilst helping progress the UK towards a Net Zero future.

Training, development and support for you:

The Chemistry Technician Degree Apprenticeship course is primarily taught through tutor-supported online study, part-time over 4 years.

Across the four years, your time will be split between your studies and on the job learning at your EDF location. You will learn predominantly online, either by joining in with live lectures where possible, or by engaging with recorded lectures and content. There will be a need to attend an intensive laboratory week each year of the programme. In the final year, you will need to complete a work-based dissertation project, for which they will need to dedicate 1 day per week in the lab.

As well as time to study support, you’ll also enjoy plenty of opportunities to get involved in meaningful and challenging work once your studies are underway. You’ll have to put a lot of work in to manage your studies and your day-to-day duties but as you’ll be on block release from work when you’re studying, we can make sure we manage your workload accordingly.

Once you’ve completed the scheme, you’ll have both academic qualifications and years of experience within EDF; that means you’ll be in the best possible position to continue your career. The future is yours for the taking!

Where you’ll work:

During the apprenticeship you will be working within the Chemistry team at either Sizewell B Power Station, Gloucester, Hinkley Point C. Your time will be split between your EDF workplace and Manchester Metropolitan University.

To join our team you’ll need:

  • A minimum of 112 UCAS points at A-level (grades BCC), with one being chemistry or an equivalent scientific discipline.
  • An appropriate BTEC National award (90+ credits).
  • A recognised Access to Science course.
  • Other relevant qualifications, if accepted by your employer, including progression from an appropriate Level 3 apprenticeship programme.
  • Relevant experience, including experience gained from voluntary activities.
  • GCSE in English (language or literature) and Maths at grade 4/C, or equivalent qualifications.
  • To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

Our Assessment Centre will be held virtually on Thursday the 21st of March.
