Role Overview

The Chief Officer reports to the Master and will be responsible for the safe and efficient running of the Deck Department of the vessel.

To be able to demonstrate exceptional professional mariner and technical skills and be able to demonstrate sound leadership and communication skills as well as the ability to think in a creative and innovative manner.

To understudy the Master so that can assume temporary command should the need arise.


Ptinciple Accountabilities

  • Head of the deck department and Master's deputy;
  • The Master's substitute in the event of incapacity or when covering hours of rest, including ship handling when required;
  • Ensuring awareness of the Company Management System within the deck department;
  • Conduct bridge watches as Officer of the Watch;
  • Manage deck Planned Maintenance System;
  • Act as the Ship's Safety Officer including the training of crew with regard to all safety related issues onboard and the briefing of company safety policies and information;
  • Act as the Ship's Security Officer, including the completion of relevant documentation and all security related training on-board;
  • Act as the vessel's Medical Officer;
  • To act as the Officer in Charge of the vessel's work party during emergency situations;
  • Duty Officer in Port (On a rotational basis);
  • Supervising cargo operations on the vehicle deck, ensuring these are conducted in accordance with prescribed standards;
  • Oversee vessels stability, including ballast operations and the monthly manual stability calculations and verifications;
  • Manage crew hours of rest, schedules, and variations plus associated administration.
  • Manage maintenance of all firefighting equipment of life saving equipment and onboard.
  • Preparing of annual overhaul works specification for Deck Department


Secondary Accountabilties

  • Ensuring effective budget control and management of stores for the Deck Department;
  • Organising work routines for Deck Crew in conjunction with the Bosun;
  • Supervision and training of all Junior Officer and Cadets onboard;
  • Maintaining vessel and crew accommodation cleanliness;
  • Liaise with Technical Managers during annual overhaul periods.
  • Completing Deck Officer & Deck Crew wages and overtime records.
  • Liaise weekly with Crew Resources re-staffing levels, certification and qualifications for the Deck Department.
  • Issue Permits to Work and ensure associated Risk Assessments are reviewed accordingly.
  • Loading of fresh water in accordance with Fresh Water Safety Management Plan.
  • The provision of detailed and comprehensive Handover Notes and End of Trip Reports for the relieving Master;
  • Accurate, timely and comprehensive Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting;
  • Implementation of the performance management procedure for line managed crew as per the defined process
  • Any other relevant duties as required by the Master.


Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Essential -

  • STCW II/2 Chief Mate CoC (Unlimited)
  • STCW V/3 Basic Training Certificate for Ships Subject to the IGF Code (for service on MGO/LNG dual fuel vessels)
  • ENG 1 (No restrictions)
  • Shipboard Safety Officer Certificate
  • Shipboard Security Officer Certificate
  • Current, in date Medical Care Aboard Ship Certificate
  • HELM (M)

Desirable

  • Higher grade of CoC
  • Signed off for Level 2 Ship handling
  • Effective communication skills and smart in appearance.
  • Experience acting up in the Higher Grade would be advantageous.
  • Be safety focused and familiar with CoSWP, permit to work and risk assessment processes within the company.
  • Be customer focused and have a clear understanding of the customer interface and have a proactive approach to customer care.
