What is theClinical Associate Psychologist (CAP) Apprenticeship?
The CAP Apprenticeship is an 18-month training programme with Elysium Healthcare psychology services and the University of Plymouth, which provides a distinct career path to start working in psychological practice.
A Clinical Associate Psychologist (CAP) is a unique role with on-the-job training and, once qualified, you will be retained as a qualified CAP at Brighton and Hove Hospital.
You will be trained to be a qualified, British Psychological Society registered Clinical Associate Psychologist, which will enable you to work alongside other psychological professionals providing psychological assessment, formulation and interventions to adults in inpatient settings, under the supervision of a Practitioner Psychologist.
How does it work?
Brighton and Hove Hospital psychology staff, Elysium Healthcare’s regional staff and the University of Plymouth’s academic staff will jointly support you in your learning journey, where your time will be split between online academic learning and working as part of a multidisciplinary mental health team at Brighton and Hove Hospital.
Once you have successfully completed the apprenticeship, you will continue your career development in the hospital departments and will have access to various Elysium career opportunities while you continue to build your psychology experience.

Eligibility criteria:
- A Bachelor’s degree in psychology with the British Psychological Society’s graduate basis for eligibility
- Have lived in UK/EU/EEA for 3 years.
- Be 2 years beyond any publicly funded psychology training as stipulated by HEE. (https://our-work/mental-health/psychological-professions/funding-psychological-professions-training-programmes).
- Have a portfolio of clinically relevant experience.
Location: 14-18 New Church Road, Hove, East Sussex, BN3 4FH
You will work at Brighton & Hove Clinic, a service that offers psychiatric services, outpatient therapies and day care programmes for adults and young people who are experiencing difficulties with their life circumstances.
The outpatient programme provides 1:1 therapy for people experiencing a wide range of psychological disorders or for those simply having difficulties with their life circumstances. The service provides treatment of a range of conditions such as psychiatric and psychological disorders, addiction, eating disorders, stress, Anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance.
The Child and Adolescent outpatient clinic is for young people between the ages of 7 to 18 years. Providing treatment for a wide range conditions that help a young person manage any mental health issues whilst maintaining as comfortable and confident lifestyle. Treatment is coordinated with the young person, their family or carer and external bodies.
This site is the primary base for this role, however there may be a requirement to work across other hospitals in the region.
