The Commercial Research Manager is responsible for leading the Telegraph’s forward-thinking consumer research output, delivering excellent audience & category understanding to all Commercial revenue-generating teams, as the business continues to redefine the relationship between advertising and the subscriber experience.

Planning for the evolving informational needs within our award-winning Commercial department is paramount, you will collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to create a programme of research studies that support both strategic and tactical requirements.

This influential role requires someone who is able to confidently manage a busy workstream where research services are in very high demand. You will be comfortable delivering actionable customer insight and recommendations, both to internal stakeholders and external partners and able to build strong relationships across the business to support increasing usage of the Telegraph’s in-house research panel.

The ideal candidate must have a passion for data and storytelling (both written and verbal), and be enthusiastic about media, category and audience analysis, as well as campaign measurement.

With research analyst(s) reporting to you, you will be required to facilitate their development, as well as assist in managing their day-to-day workflow.

2024 sees the launch of Compass, a research and insights agency powered by TMG’s researchers, analysts and commercial journalists. The successful candidate will therefore have an exciting opportunity to get stuck into a new workstream that brings with it a variety of exciting challenges, from product creation to execution.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead on audience insight projects to help support partnership leads and media planners across the Commercial department
  • Support the Head of Insights & SEO on thought leadership projects that help establish the Telegraph as a leading data business
  • Manage the ideation and execution of products sold via Compass, the Telegraph’s in-house research agency
  • Streamline reporting and insights tools to improve the Commercial self-serve experience
  • Contribute to proactive/new business pitches, helping to generate new revenue-making partnerships and products
  • Act as a point of quality control for all Commercial Research delivered to stakeholders internally or partners externally.
  • Re-think (where appropriate) methodologies for core Commercial Research outputs, including effectiveness studies, consumer trackers and annual studies
  • Liaise with planners at Kantar and IPSOS to ensure that third party consumer surveys are fit for use by a premium, subscriber-focussed organisation
  • Act as a conduit for industry news and research innovation, attending seminars and working groups with industry bodies, such as AOP and IAB
  • Champion the Telegraph’s panel and provide connectivity between consumer research and different departments across the business

 Requirements

  • Highly skilled within the field of quantitative research, with good understanding of qualitative methods
  • A strong end-to-end data storyteller
  • A solid background, demonstrable experience in senior research roles, and ideally within a media or publishing organisation
  • Confident in presenting to senior stakeholders/c-suite advertising executives
  • People and product management experience
  • Experience with media trading data and its tools, such as PAMCo, TGI or IPSOS.
  • A comprehensive understanding of effectiveness research and post-campaign analysis
  • Understands the basic tools of continuous improvement, work process redesign, or reengineering
  • Strong analytical reasoning, interpreting and evaluating complex information, while identifying patterns and commercial value points
  • Strong knowledge of competitor analysis practices
  • Excellent attention to detail in reporting and presentations, with ability to succinctly communicate findings
  • Project management. High level of organisational and communication skills is key.
