King’s Climate & Sustainability (KCS) is a new university-wide initiative to step up our response to the challenge of climate emergency and global sustainability, and to accelerate and connect research, education and action across King’s. With an ambition to become a net zero institution, King’s has already made progress to embed sustainability into our operations. We are now uniquely positioned to amplify, connect and scale impactful research, education and action, build new connections between fields of study – including technological, socio-economic, legal, geopolitical – and create meaningful external partnerships to deliver strong, distinctive and visible contributions to the challenge of achieving just and fair transitions to sustainability. The Communications Manager is an exciting new role to manage internal and external communications for KCS. The role holder will work with faculties and colleagues across the university to showcase the full breadth of our climate and sustainability research, expertise and action. They will work closely with colleagues within the KCS team on internal communications and engagement activities, to ensure our staff and students understand the university’s sustainability ambitions and engage with opportunities to take further action. The role will also include the organisation of a series of internal events and high-profile external debates and other events, to showcase King’s expertise, convene expert and public discussion, and influence and shape the national and global debate on environment, climate and transitions to sustainability. This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31/07/26. This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent Essential criteria A relevant professional qualification, or demonstrable training, in communications or public relations. Significant experience of working in a communications role and developing plans in line with organisational ambitions, including communication plans/strategies, projects/campaigns, budgets. Strong levels of creativity, with the ability to understand and translate complex themes and messages to external and internal audiences, and expertise in how to create and communicate those messages in credible and engaging ways. Experience and skill in creating and managing web content and social media channels within a content management system and/or use of HTML. Excellent creative writing skills, with an ability to adapt to multiple styles and uses and editing and proofing skills, with an eye for detail. Knowledge of how to monitor and evaluate communications activities, e.g. online impressions created, likes, shares, QR codes, traditional print media coverage etc. Experience of influencing and negotiating with stakeholders, often beyond your immediate team, applying judgement and identifying solutions to complex situations. Passion for climate change and sustainability issues. Adaptable and resilient, with the energy and ability to cope with ambiguity, pressure and tight deadlines, and to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities. Experience of managing staff in a supportive, empathetic and inclusive way. Experience of collaborative team working to deliver successful outcomes. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear and concise written materials, write in different tones and styles for different audiences and build effective networks. IT literate, including the ability to use all Microsoft packages and an aptitude and desire to learn to use new tools. Desirable criteria Knowledge and understanding of the UK Higher Education sector.
