Job description

The Community Rail Team, hosted by Westmorland & Furness Council and working in partnership with Cumberland Council, is seeking a new officer to help further connect our residents and visitors with the railway particularly in the South Cumbria area.

The Community Rail Team works in partnership primarily with train operators, local communities and local authorities to facilitate the growth of passenger footfall and enhance station facilities in a sustainable, integrated and inclusive way.

About this opportunity

This exciting opportunity is offered for a self-motivated individual, with excellent interpersonal, project management and communication skills, together with previous experience of bid-writing and community engagement. The successful applicant will be confident meeting and working with a wide range of people; possess marketing and public speaking skills; be computer literate including experience of website and social media activities; be organised in administrative procedures such as minuting meetings, report writing and diary management.

The post holder will work with the Community Rail Team, the Community Rail Partnership Chairs and Steering Groups with a key focus on the Lakes Line (Windermere to Oxenholme) and the Furness Line (Barrow to Lancaster) creating opportunities which further connect our communities with the railway.

Who we are looking for

Working with our Community Rail Partnerships and station volunteer groups, you will be responsible for developing and delivering activity plans which address the key pillars within the Department for Transport’s Community Rail Development Strategy:

  • be a voice for the local communities,
  • promote sustainable and healthy travel,
  • involve diverse groups, and
  • support social / economic development.

This is a varied post and applicants will require some flexibility of hours, balancing home working with meetings across the rail network and some regional/ national interaction. A duty pass for Northern Trains Ltd will be provided to allow travel on the network and access to office space hosted by Westmorland & Furness Council and Cumberland Council will be available.
