Job description

We are looking for a Consultant to join the Liverpool and Sefton Perinatal Mental Health Team. The applicant would join an expanding team striving to provide the best care for women and families in Merseyside.
We are looking for a Consultant to lead the Sefton part of this team as we are expanding with extra funding to meet the NHS Long Term Plan. You would work alongside another Consultant, SAS and Core Training Doctor in the wider Liverpool and Sefton team.
The team consists of a wide MDT including clinical leads, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, family, support workers, health visitors, family therapists, CBT therapists, assistant psychologists.
We work as part of a regional Cheshire and Mersey Perinatal Service with leadership team to help develop the service, lead in research and support the teams.
The post holder will provide clinical medical leadership to the team and clinical advice to staff working in all areas of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust
They will be directly involved with assessment diagnosis and management of pregnant and post-natal women referred with complex difficulties or prominent risk issues.
Ensure that all service users newly accepted into the service have a comprehensive review, with the Consultant providing supervision, consultation and advice in relation to assessment and diagnosis to non-medical practitioners.
While primarily responsible for delivering a quality clinical service, the consultant perinatal psychiatrist is also expected to be actively involved in the strategic development of the team as part of wider Cheshire and Mersey Perinatal service linking with Perinatal teams working in North West Boroughs NHS Foundation Trust and Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Caseload is approximately 200 however this includes joint working with patients open to other services. There is a perinatal only caseload and managed in the usual CPA / non-CPA pathways. All CPA patients will be seen medically as per policy. All pre-conception will be seen by Consultant / SAS. This caseload will increase as with NHSE LTP – access rates are increasing to 10% and also case management will increase from 12 months to 24 months post natal if appropriate.
Clinics will be offered for pre-conception, antenatal and postnatal women.

Consultant psychiatrist will have responsibility for their caseload
To supervise and support team members who carry out assessments of patients referred to the team. To carry out comprehensive psychiatric assessments and provide medical interventions for patients.
Supporting staff to manage psychiatric emergencies
To conduct patient reviews and lead Multidisciplinary reviews, birth planning meetings, CPA reviews, discharge planning meetings and multi-professional meetings
To be the responsible clinician for the purposes of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and carry out duties in accordance with the code of practice.
To carry out comprehensive Risk Assessments and participate in Trust’s risk management processes such as Health Risk Assessment and Management Meetings (H-RAMM) and Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangement (MAPPA) Meetings
To provide medical leadership to the team.
Maintain high level of effective communication with other parts of the Mental health service across the Trust, across maternity services and primary care.
Liaison with families / carers
Liaison with aspects of the Criminal Justice System regarding patients, where necessary.
Liaising with other stakeholders and interested parties.
The post holder will receive any necessary training as provided by HENW in order to achieve Level One trainer status, which will allow them to act as a clinical supervisor to trainees. Once approved the post holder will have the opportunity to take on the role of clinical and educational supervisor responsibility for the trainees based with the team if trainees become available in time.
The successful applicant will be expected to provide clinical supervision and training for junior doctors according to the requirements laid down in the contract held between the Trust and the Postgraduate Dean. There may be opportunities to provide a clinical attachment for medical students from Liverpool Medical school, and Consultants are responsible for organising their teaching.
The post holder will regularly attend the Tuesday morning postgraduate programme (currently virtual) weekly SPA sessions. This is well attended by Consultants and is a lively meeting. It includes case conferences and journal presentations. One meeting per month is an audit programme with a prize twice a year for the best audit. Occasionally it includes mandatory training slots and guest speakers.
The Consultant Group has one lunchtime continuing professional development meeting each month. This involves presentations by invited speakers on topics agreed by the Consultant group, or discussions of clinical cases primarily intended for peer support.
There is a well resourced and expanding clinical effectiveness, research and resource library developed within the Trust. It has a dedicated space at Rathbone Hospital site where there is access to various databases both locally held and Internet based.
The consultant is expected to provide training where appropriate to wider perinatal MDT service, with trust and to external agencies.
