Job description

Your decisions make all the difference...

As a Crossing Keeper, you’ll play a vital role in moving passengers and freight through your part of the rail network, and for the safe onward journeys of other level crossing users including cars and pedestrians.

And if you make the grade then you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently joined the top 50 in the Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Your main responsibilities
Every day you’ll be responsible for controlling the movement of crossing barriers that keep trains moving through on time. You’ll raise the barriers to let other users across the tracks only when it’s safe for them to do so. And you’ll be proactive in maintaining barriers and other crossing equipment, responding quickly to any faults or potential safety risks.

Each level crossing is unique with different users, activity and equipment but safety is always paramount. You’ll play a vital role in the onward journey of all users of your level crossing. This might mean challenging unsafe behaviour or managing difficult situations.

Your skills matter and many of our Crossing Keepers started with no formal rail experience and have also progressed into higher grade Signaller roles. Any work you’ve done which has required concentration, is safety critical and involves communicating with others would stand you in good stead.

Is this for you?
Rail experience isn't required, here's the transferrable skills you’ll need to show us as part of your application:

  • Communication – A variety of clear communication skills are essential as a Crossing Keeper.
  • Ability to learn – You’ll be learning on the job and will need this to work safely and confidently.
  • Ability to work alone – Every Crossing Keeper requires the ability to operate efficiently and make safety critical decisions confidently and independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a team – Whilst being able to work confidently alone, it is important that you are a team player.
  • Attention to detail – The role requires consistent high levels of attention but varying levels of concentration. When things go quiet you need to be ready to spring into action.
  • Multi-Tasking – You will be expected to deal with phone calls, signal trains, block lines for maintenance work and complete administration tasks.
  • Working Under Pressure – Due to the intense and challenging events that can occur on the railway, it is crucial you are able to remain calm whilst working under pressure.
  • Decision Making - By its nature, you need to make safety critical decisions throughout the course of your shift.

You’ll also need to be within a 60-minute commute of the location that you’re applying to work at and will need access to your own transport to allow for the different shift work.

This role involves days, nights and weekend working and the job is safety critical. Offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing and passing of the relevant medical assessment and BPSS pre-employment checks. This will include a hearing and eyesight examination.
