Hours/Contract: 37 hours Mon-Fri, Permanent

The role

Here at Northumbria Police, we think our region is amazing! This could be the perfect time for you to join us in our Forensic ServicesDepartment as a CSIU Volume Crime Vehicle Examiner.

Providing forensic advice and examining vehicles from Volume Crime scenes, prioritising where necessary, you will maximise the identity and recovery of forensic evidence and intelligence. You will provide effective and high-quality support to the investigation of volume vehicle crime and further the key objectives of the Force.

What you’ll do

  • Provide daily specialist forensic advice and guidance to Investigating Officers, and members of the public, as part of the crime scene triage process for vehicle crime.
  • Produce accurate, comprehensive and timely reports for criminal justice use, and produce professional evidential testimony in court when required.
  • Deploy the most appropriate vehicle crime scene examination strategy in line with force procedures, including anti-contamination considerations, and dynamic risk assessments. Process the vehicle scene using validated methods and digitally record the vehicle using specialist approved techniques, ensuring the integrity and continuity of evidence.
  • You’ll use your knowledge to identify items that require specialist analysis and submit appropriately, completing all relevant paperwork to ensure compliance with force policy and appropriate legislation.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and maintenance of forensic quality standards and procedures in line with compliance to the Forensic Science Regulator Code of Practice, International Organisation of Standardisation and forensic regulations under any other governing bodies.
  • Provide advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders in relation to the quality standards of seizure and packaging of forensic evidence.

What you’ll bring

Essential

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent academic qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. forensic science, crime scene science, policing/investigation) or completion of an accredited/ recognised vocational crime scene investigation training programme; or at least three years operational policing/criminal investigation experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of information gathering and problem solving.
  • An ability to develop and motivate themselves and others within a team in line with organisational behaviours, and values.
  • Able to utilise a range of methods to communicate and adapt to the needs of others both within the organisation and external customers.
  • Current Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

  • Previous successful completion of crime scene investigation Stage 1 qualification or equivalent.
  • An understanding of the Criminal Justice System.
  • An understanding of the role of the Forensic Science Regulator and quality standards.
  • Demonstrable experience of using own initiative to highlight areas for improvement with a range of solutions.

Terms of appointment

This is a permanent role subject to a six-month probationary period.
