Job description

How you'll make a difference

In this key role, you will make a difference to the needs of children and young people across our schools. We are looking for someone with an enthusiasm for English who would be keen to improve the provision across our primary schools.

We are passionate about improving outcomes for children and young people, and you will promote the highest possible standards of education across South Gloucestershire and beyond. You will provide advice, support, guidance and training to all maintained schools whilst working closely with multi-academy trust partners.

Although this is a full-time role, we would welcome applications from those wanting to work part time hours.

What will you be doing?

  • In this role, you will support schools to develop their English provision to achieve the best possible outcomes for their learners, including those who need additional support to succeed.
  • Focusing on your expertise and skills, you will provide clear school improvement advice on developing reading, writing, speaking and listening to the education sector to inform policy development and activity across the council.
  • Regularly, you will contribute to whole-school reviews and visit schools to evaluate the quality of their English provision through analysis of data, school curriculum, lesson visits and talking to pupils and staff.
  • Using your detailed knowledge of English and strong practice, you will provide feedback and support to school leaders and challenge where necessary to promote school improvement.
  • You will provide different models of support including working alongside staff in schools, providing training and monitoring the impact of your work.
  • You will lead on Key Stage 2 moderation across the council, including managing the moderation team and providing this service to South Gloucestershire schools and to academies from other local authorities who choose our support.

What we need from you

  • You must be a qualified teacher with leadership experience in English.
  • Ideally, you should have a good understanding of education settings, experience of working constructively with leaders and colleagues to create improvements in schools and understand the safeguarding issues of working in education.
  • Given the elements of this role, you will be solution-focused and able to work with officers and school leaders to plan projects that address school priorities to improve provision in English.
  • We require you to have sound knowledge of the education legislation, statutory and non-statutory guidance, quality frameworks, national policies and Ofsted requirements as they apply to English.
  • It is essential for you to have a good understanding of education research, the national priorities and expectations for English in primary schools.
  • You will be able to produce accurate and succinct evidence-based reports, have good presentation skills with the ability to provide training both online and face-to-face.
  • Ideally, you should have experience of planning, managing, leading, and monitoring projects and plans.
  • You will have a full driving licence and access to suitable means of travel to visit schools and settings throughout the local authority.

Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.

Salary will be from £51,425 to £55,553.  In addition to this, up to 3 SPAs can be applied for on meeting the eligibility criteria.
