Job description

About the role

The starting salary for this position is £13.31 per hour, plus £1.99 per hour annual leave allowance (£15.30 per hour total).

Want to work locally?

Like to be outdoors?

Interested in enthusing groups of young learners?

Then we'd like to hear from you about joining our Cycle Training Team. Most of our training is delivered by Instructors working in pairs at schools and consists of both playground and on-the-road training.

Surrey County Council offers an accredited Bikeability scheme and works to the National Standard for cycle training. As a new Instructor you will receive training, observe experienced Instructors delivering courses, and then be a 'third' Instructor to help build your confidence and skills. The reward of the job is in seeing how your riders progress!

To be considered for interview for this position, we please ask that you submit a personal statement together with your CV. Applications received without a personal statement will, regrettably, not be considered. Your personal statement should show, in your own words, that you have understood what the Cycling Instructor role involves and how you are a suitable candidate.

Your personal statement must evidence that you:

  • Have an interest in, and understanding of, the needs of children who are trying to improve their cycling skills.
  • Have professional or voluntary experience of working with children, or of training adults. Your experience does not need to be cycling related.
  • Have reasonable 'local journey' cycling skills, including negotiating junctions and sharing the road with traffic. A practical assessment will form part of the interview.
  • Understand the typical working pattern described below.

Instructor Qualification Training

Successful applicants must undertake the "Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training," a nationally recognised qualification. It is a five-day course, usually spread over ten days, with additional coursework. Your time for this, and all other training, is paid.

Typical Working Pattern

Typically, you will need to arrive at a school to run a training course at 08:45am. Training usually continues until lunchtime. You will also sometimes have an afternoon course scheduled and then you will finish at 3pm.

Our Level 2 courses usually run for consecutive days Monday to Friday. Level 1 courses are usually a single day. Whilst you do not need to accept all work that is offered, you need to be available for all of the days of the courses you do accept.

The amount of work you will be offered will depend on the number of requests for training we receive. Some periods are busier than others and there are some periods when no work will be on offer. In busy periods you could be offered 20-30 hours of work per week.

Work is offered using a calendar system; you will enter any periods you will not be available for work. We endeavour to offer work at your closer schools (mainly schools within 10 miles of your home address).

At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values we follow.

For more information please find the full job description below and refer to this before submitting your application. We also invite you to read our Life at Surrey handbook to see insights of the culture at Surrey and how as a valued employee, you can help shape our Council.

Additional information

Interviews will be held on a rolling basis as applications are received.

You will need to undertake the qualification training before you can instruct.

An Enhanced DBS 'Disclosure and Barring Service' check for regulated activity (formerly known as CRB) and the Children's Barred List check will be required for this role.
