Introduction
The BBC has been serving audiences online for more than 20 years. Across key products including BBC iPlayer, News, Sport, Weather and Sounds, we entertain, educate and inform audiences in their millions every day.

We are creating personalised content, products and services that bring the right content, to the right people, at the right time - a personalised BBC. This will be our greatest leap since iPlayer, and that's why it's right at the top of our agenda.
At the BBC we see data as fundamental on that journey. We use data and machine learning to enrich our content and power personalised experiences for millions of audience members. We're looking for a Analytics Engineering Lead to support our analytics engineering effort, improve our data operations processes, feed into our data infrastructure, and help accelerate the value unlocked by our existing data activity. This role will be key in successfully delivering our Digital First strategy.
Meet the Product Data Team
We are Product Data team, sitting inside the BBC's digital and online products area called Product Group. Our digital products include some of the UK's most popular online services such as BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, BBC News and BBC Bitesize.
Our Product data team comprises of data analysts, data scientists, analytics developers and data managers. In the last 18 months we have grown our team substantially, and we are looking to grow our tracking implementation team next.
Responsibilities
What is the role?
You will :
Architect the automated data pipelines and workflows to power our Data Products, ensuring data usability, scalability and value
Drive forward data management principles for the division they work in, including measuring and improving data integration, data quality, data governance and data security for the data products they are responsible for
Drive continuous improvement in Analytics Development processes, leveraging agile, DevOps principles to enable and empower our analytics engineers across our teams
Serve as a key point of contact for data incident management, leading incident response efforts, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing preventive measures to mitigate future incidents
Take a provide approach to data incident management, developing robust incident response protocols, and leading rapid resolution efforts to minimise downtime and ensure data availability
Lead on data quality monitoring and alerting, proactively detect and address data quality issues before they impact business operations and work closely with the wider analytics engineering team to embed data quality monitoring
Collaborate effectively with cross functional teams including data platform engineers to continuously improve data development environment and testing infrastructure
Develop trusted relationships with senior members of the Editorial, Marketing and Product teams
Able to build and maintain strong working relationships where you might, as a specialist, have to manage expectations of multiple senior colleagues which conflicting needs and pressures
Help non-data oriented colleagues understand how data products and analytical engineering can help achieve the strategic goals of the BBC.
Plan resource and recruitment of the team to ensure the needs of the business are being met

Technical skills
Previous experience (5+ years) in Analytics or Data Engineering role, preferably in a managerial role for at least 18 months
Experience of setting up and running data incident and data operational processes at scale
Experience of continuous integration and continuous development (CI/CD) practices in analytics engineering
Strong programming skills in languages such as Python and SQL
Strong knowledge of version control software such as Git
Experience of working with data warehouses (Redshift, Snowflake), transform tools (DBT), orchestration tools (Airflow) and data observation tools
Proficiency in modern industry best practice data modelling and data architecture principles.
Experience with data profiling, data cleansing and data validation techniques.
Leadership and Strategic Skills
Experience managing a high performing data teams and understanding career path progression for analytics and data engineers.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including non-technical stakeholders
Experience of setting strategic direction of a project, or a major initiative
Familiarity with agile development methodologies and a track record of delivering projects on time and within scope.
Ability to collaborate effectively, working alongside other team members towards the team's goals, and enabling others to succeed, where possible.
Interview Process
For Shortlisted Candidates, the interview will consist of :
A first round 45 minute initial telephone call with the hiring manager
Second round, a take home exercise will be provided prior to a one hour panel interview which will be remote
