We are seeking a motived and capable team player to join the Infrastructure team at EMBL-EBI. EMBL-EBI operates 3 Data Centre sites in support of its world leading life sciences services, research and training activities. Working closely with members of Information Technology Services (ITS), the Data Centre Engineer will ensure the operation, integrity and audit of these IT hosting environments and equipment vital to EMBL-EBI scientific activities.
This position reports to the Technical Coordinator, Data Centre and Network Infrastructure within the Infrastructure Team.
Your role
Working under the direction of the Data Centre and Network Infrastructure Coordinator, the Data Centre Engineer will:
Build and maintain relationships with Facilities Teams wherever EMBL-EBI hosts IT equipment
Identify and manage operational risks, faults and systematic issues to solution, carrying out root cause analysis as required
Carry out firmware upgrades, and supervise hardware repairs
Monitor and report on key metrics across the hosting estate, including temperature, humidity, cooling performance, space utilisation, power utilisation and phase balance
Identify, recommend and take action on opportunities for improvements in efficiency
Manage and maintain the register of all IT assets and spares in EMBL-EBI hosted environments in the Data Centre Infrastructure Management system (DCIM), ensuring it remains up to date at all times
Coordinate processes for asset installation, movement, retirement, and disposal, working with Finance and Purchasing teams to ensure compliance with EMBL policy and reporting requirements.
Work closely with IT vendors and 3rd-party engineers, and track Data Centre access for hardware maintenance.
Project manage IT installations, including equipment placement, power and network requirements, logistics, and appropriate supervision of 3rd party engineers. At project completion, ensure that the installation is finalised as specified in the tender (if applicable), properly recorded in the DCIM, and handed over to the IT team(s).
Maintain and develop strict policy with regards to Data Centre activity by 3rd parties and IT staff. This will involve liaison with other EMBL-EBI teams such as Health and Safety.
Ensure that IT staff who are admitted to the DC environment are trained appropriately, and aware of policy.
Develop good working relationships with ITS staff, while maintaining a firm approach to policy and process enforcement
Communicate effectively and develop good working relationships with colleagues within ITS, and at all levels of the organisation beyond
Participate in organisational conversations on subjects such as energy saving, efficiency, business continuity, security, and resilience where appropriate to the role.
Physically install and relocate IT equipment such as servers and switches

Contract duration: 3 years (renewable up to 9 years)
Grading: Grade 6 (Monthly salary starting at £3,456 after tax) + Other paid benefits and allowances based on circumstances

You have
A degree within the IT domain, Engineering, or equivalent experience and professional certification.
At least 3 years experience in an IT support or facilities management role
Solid understanding of Data Centre environmental systems, and power distribution:
Three-phase power
HVAC systems
UPS systems
PUE
Humidity control
ASHRAE standards or equivalent
Principles of redundancy
Hands-on experience managing large installations and movement of IT equipment movement across multiple locations
Hands-on experience installing a variety of IT equipment in industry-standard racks (racking, cabling) to a consistent high standard.
IT hardware maintenance and fault finding.
Attention to detail.
Experience with asset tracking or Data Centre information management platforms.
Strong project management skills.
Vendor/supplier relationship management.
The ability to manually handle, lift, install and reallocate IT hardware such as servers, switches
You might also have
Networking to CCNA standard or above.
Experience with infrastructure cabling and cabling standards.
Comfortable working with portable KVM equipment, serial consoles, and BMC/management interfaces for fault finding and firmware management.
Strong project management and vendor relationship skills.
Solid interpersonal and written English communication skills
Demonstrated desire and ability to learn and develop new skills
Proven ability to work well in a team, building positive relationships and sharing knowledge
