Job summary

This is an exciting time to join the Data Protection Team in the Department for Business & Trade (DBT). We are working to embed a major compliance strategy and you will be part of a collaborative Knowledge and Information Management Team (KIM) of subject matter experts.
DBT supports UK businesses to grow, create jobs and takes advantage of the global appetite for British goods and services, as well as assisting international companies to collaborate with UK suppliers. We are based in Whitehall but also have offices both across the country and around the world.
KIM play an important role within the Department for Business & Trade. It is imperative that systems and procedures are in place so that material is held securely, and knowledge is not lost, and procedures are sustainable to ensure information is managed, controlled and exploited.
We are seeking a Data Protection Advisor who will play a key role in the Data Protection Team. The successful candidate will play a significant role in supporting organisational Data Protection compliance, overseeing DPIAs, performing SARs and managing data breaches.
The Data Protection Team sits in the KIM Team. Key KIM functions and responsibilities/ownership include information management, governance, organisation transparency, freedom of information, Data Protection and records management.
This is an opportunity for the right candidate to develop within a high performing team. The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the Data Protection Risk Assurance Manager the and will work to embed good Data Protection practices and manage compliance risk.

Job description

Data Protection Advisor
This exciting opportunity within the Data Protection Team will involve supporting the implementation of UK GDPR compliance into 'business as usual' activities across DIT by playing a key role across a number of workstreams. You will support the implementation of policies and processes to ensure departmental adherence to relevant legislation.

  • You will be responsible for monitoring and promoting compliance with, and act as the primary source for expert advice & guidance about, UK GDPR and Data Protection law
  • Provide expert, well-structured and detailed advice and guidance to colleagues about their obligations under privacy and Data Protection legislation, including responding to SAR requests in a timely manner, ensuring legislation is accurately applied, and best practice is followed.
  • Identifying risks to new projects to resolve Data Protection issues by undertaking Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), advising internal & external stakeholders on Privacy Notices (PNs).
  • An ability to manage casework autonomously and work to tight deadlines. Maintaining a high level of record keeping.
  • Assist the Deputy DPO and be a key point of contact for handling of any data breaches notifications, investigating and making recommendations.
  • Help to drive engagement with and adherence to policies and standards at an operational level, helping to shape the overall Data Protection and information strategy.
  • Provide assurance to ensure controls which manage risks associated with Data Protection and GDPR are adequately designed, implemented and effective.
  • Assist in the roll out of GDPR awareness across the department and wider business.

Person specification

Essential Criteria
While a Data Protection qualification is not mandatory, the following are essential requirements for the role:

  • Experience of or a demonstrable understanding of information management, Data Protection and the associated legislation.
  • Knowledge of the Data Protection Act provisions and experience of conducting work on Data Protection Impact Assessments and applying the relevant legislation effectively.
  • Proven track record of subject matter expertise; providing advice & guidance on Data Protection legislation queries.
  • Experience of managing a wide range of stakeholders

Desirable Criteria


  • Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection or equivalent experience
  • Relevant professional qualification or equivalent extensive experience in a dedicated Information Governance, Security, Privacy or Data Protection management and / or compliance role

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
