Job description

About the role

Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

If you are passionate about net zero, enthusiastic about making a real difference to society and enjoy working in a talented and collaborative environment then please consider applying for a role with the Electricity System Operator (ESO) as it transforms to become the Future System Operator (FSO) for GB. The FSO is an independent and expert whole energy organisation on a mission to accelerate our energy transition.

Reporting into the Gas Network Planning Manager, the Data Scientist (Network Planning) works as part of a flexible pool, leveraging sophisticated data management, mining, and modelling capabilities to extract insights, solve problems and drive informed data-driven decision making from the complex data pools that the FSO holds.

This role can be based from Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About us

Our mission is to facilitate the decarbonisation of Great Britain’s energy network and ensure the delivery of reliable, affordable, and green electricity for consumers. We work with stakeholders across the whole energy industry to plan for future network needs, using insight to make sure we can balance the system today and find opportunities to transform the way it operates tomorrow.

Becoming the Future System Operator

In 2021, government and Ofgem jointly consulted on proposals for an expert, impartial Future System Operator (FSO) with responsibilities across both the electricity and gas systems, to drive progress towards net zero while maintaining energy security and minimising costs for consumers. In October 2023, the Energy Act 2023 was passed, legislating for this Future System Operator to be created.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new Future System Operator. We will be taking on additional roles across vectors and sectors to create an organisation with a whole energy system mindset; enabling us to identify solutions to our energy system that are more sustainable, secure, and affordable for all.

The FSO will be set up as a public corporation with operational independence from government – bringing parties together to support optimised decision making and action. As now, it will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements. It is anticipated that the new organisation will be up and running in 2024.

The time to act on climate change is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working within established data handling guidelines and parameters, collect, collate, and cleanse raw data and convert into useable formats. Apply an end-to-end mindset, understanding both where the data has come from and how it will / can be used to drive meaningful decision support for the FSO leadership.
  • Build and develop the data models required by Gas Network Analysts to assess network capability requirements.
  • Test scenarios and ensure accuracy of data feeds using supply and demand data to generate scenarios, using supporting tools to group capability assessment into regional zones etc.
  • Leverage predicative analytics to build models and forecasts for future trends related to the Network Planning function’s remit.
  • Perform exploratory analysis of large complex data sets to derive insights and valuable actions.
  • Interpret large data sets and convert into data visualisations with supporting narrative and key messages and be able to present them to peer Data Scientists, business stakeholders, and managers at various levels.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the breadth of the FSO business – and particularly those within the Network Planning function – to identify potential problems and develop data-driven solutions. Translate raw data into actionable insight and business intelligence that helps key decision-makers in the FSO business to be effective.
  • Stay abreast of developments and advancements in data-science, machine learning, automation, and other relevant trends to drive continuous improvements in how the FSO manages and capitalises on the information and data it holds.
  • Undertake ad hoc projects and initiatives relevant to data management, data handling, data cleansing, high-volume analytics, and insight generation as requested by FSO management.
