Job description

AnyVan makes moving anything anywhere, easier, more affordable and greener for everyone. With Over 8 million customers across the UK and Europe since our launch over a decade ago, we’re proud to be known as the largest, fastest growing tech company in the logistics industry.
Like many popular marketplaces, we’re asset light – i.e., we don’t own any vehicles or employ any drivers. We work with our transport partners and use technology to disrupt the entire delivery and moving process to optimise the most efficient journeys.
Sustainability is a core part of AnyVan’s mission. We’re proud to say we’ve achieved carbon-neutral status on all our transport moves, and we won’t stop here!
So if you want to move your career forward we'd love to hear from you!

Our routing and optimisation team help ensure we deliver industry leading products/services for our customers and delivery partners, whilst minimising our environmental impact.

As a Data Scientist in our Routing and Optimisation team, you will design and develop scalable, innovative algorithms for a variety of complex decision problems.

You will be part of the squad consisting of scientists and engineers, responsible to develop, production level low-latency algorithms from scratch. You will work under the guidance of a senior/lead scientist to develop meta heuristics based algorithms to a very challenging variant of vehicle routing problem and work with the engineering team to bring this algorithm to production.

What you'll be doing:

  • Use data science techniques in creative ways to impact meaningful decisioning for the business
  • Work alongside the senior/lead Data Scientists to deliver high quality production level algorithm code
  • Maintain and enhance our existing vehicle routing model to gain actionable business insights
  • Develop, implement and test new modelling approaches
  • Work with; Heuristic routing, price optimisation, clustering techniques, outlier detection modelling, k-means, linear, logistic and many more regression techniques
  • Interact with a range of key stakeholders, to help identify, scope, plan and manage projects and ensure findings can be easily translatable to both technical and non-technical internal audiences

Skills and experience we think you'll need to be successful in the role:

  • Strong academic background in Operations Research, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Machine Learning, or Statistics (or fields related to algorithms)
  • Some experience and a passion for developing Optimisation or machine learning solutions in a fast paced environment
  • Experience developing scalable algorithms to large scale combinatorial optimisation problems such as vehicle routing, scheduling and facilities location from scratch rather than packages like google-or-tools.
  • Knowledge of mixed integer programming, decomposition techniques, meta heuristics, approximate algorithms, constraint programming, machine learning, deep learning
  • Hands on experience in developing production-ready with some programming language (Python/Java/C++)
  • Communication is key - you must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex problems simply to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • The below is advantageous but not essential
  • Hands on experience with Rust/golangprogramming languages
  • Understanding of agile concepts and ability to work in agile teams
  • Experience in logistics

  • Please note that this role is based in our office in London 3 days a week and we are looking for candidates who are currently based in the UK and who can commute to Hammersmith on a regular basis.

DE&I
In our pursuit of fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace, we invite individuals from all backgrounds to join us in our mission. Together, let's create a culture where every voice is heard, every perspective is valued, and every person is empowered to thrive.

Please note if we are able to support visa sponsorship it will be highlighted in the requirements section of the job advert.

Working Patterns
We are extremely proud of our culture and believe in the many benefits that being in the office provides - all our roles require regular time in our office in Hammersmith.
We do not offer fully remote roles but we support hybrid working wherever possible (3 days in office, 2 days from home). However, to meet the needs of our customers and business operations many of our Operational and Commercial roles are fully office based.
