Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £45,585 to £54,395 with potential progression once in post to £61,198 Hours: Part Time (22.5 working hours per week) Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to March 2027 Role Summary The University of Birmingham’s oral, gastrointestinal and systemic health (OGS) theme of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Inflammation to appoint part-time Dental Hygenist/Research Fellow to work with a multidisciplinary team investigation the links between oral, inflammatory bowel and systemic inflammatory diseases. It is a requirement that the appointee will possess a PhD in a relevant subject and further training in periodontology beyond their undergraduate degree. Successful applicants will join an exciting programme involving oral and biological phenotyping of inception inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients within the Institute of Translational Medicine. Main duties will be clinical phenotyping of the cohort and collection of biological samples for a multi-omic analytical work programme, aimed at identifying diagnostic and prognostic markers for IBD as well as predictors of precision medical therapies. Directed by the theme leads, Professor’s Iain Chapple and Tariq Iqbal, there will also be opportunities to engage with laboratory sciences and or computational biological analytical approaches as a post-doctoral scientist, within a supportive environment. Person Specification General: A PhD or equivalent qualification Extensive research experience and scholarship within subject specialism Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results Extensive experience of applying and/or developing and devising successful models, techniques and methods Extensive experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action Specific: A Clinical Dental Research Hygienist (or dental clinician with equivalent scope of periodontal practice) who is eligible for GDC registration (temporary registration eligibility is acceptable given the nature of the post). Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant biological discipline. Candidates should have undertaken additional postgraduate clinical training in the periodontal field, either at substantive CPD or master’s level. Core clinical skills, including phlebotomy. Some experience of working in the periodontal-systemic disease area. Desirable: research experience in IBD.
