We have an exciting opportunity for a Dental Therapist to join our team here at Shotley Bridge Dental Care. We are currently building our 6th surgery and we are a independent mixed NHS/Private practice. We have a fantastic supportive team as well as mentorship if required.
Purpose of the job
Carry out dental therapy treatment direct to patients under the prescription of a dentist in line with current legislation and regulations and in accordance with the GDC requirements under reasonable guidance from the practice owner and dentists you are working with. You may also be asked to perform such other tasks as the practice owner shall reasonably request.
Employment duties
- Carry out a high quality dental therapy treatment direct to patients or under the prescription of a dentist in line with current legislation and regulations
- Maintain the required professional registration, indemnity and insurance
- Undertake continuing professional development to meet the GDC requirements
- Follow practice policies and procedures
- Promote, establish and maintain productive working relationships with all members of the dental team
- Liaise with the principal on all matters concerning administration, pay and service conditions
- Supervise the assisting dental nurse in regard to clinical matters
- Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your work
Key tasks
- Diagnosis and treatment planning
- Obtain a detailed dental history from patients and evaluate their medical history
- Carry out a clinical examination within your competence
- Complete periodontal examination and charting and use indices to screen and monitor periodontal disease
- Diagnose a treatment plan within your competence
- Prescribe radiographs
- Take, process and interpret various film views used in general dental practice
- Plan the delivery of care for patients
- Keep full, accurate and contemporaneous patient records
- If working on prescription, vary the detail but not the direction of the prescription according to patient needs
- Preventative care and advice
- Give appropriate patient advice
- Provide preventative oral care to patients and liaise with dentists over the treatment of caries, periodontal disease and tooth wear
- Give patients advice on how to stop smoking
- Refer patients to other healthcare professionals if necessary
- Clinical procedures
- Undertake supragingival and subgingival scaling and root surface debridement using manual and powered instruments
- Use appropriate anti-microbial therapy to manage plaque related diseases
- Adjust restored surfaces in relation to periodontal treatment
- Apply topical treatments and fissure sealants
- Take intra and extra – oral photographs
- Give infiltration and inferior dental block analgesia
- Place temporary dressings and re-cement crowns with temporary cement
- Place rubber dam
- Take impressions
- Care of implants and treatment of peri-implant tissues
- Carry out pulpotomies on primary teeth
- Extract primary teeth
- Place pre-formed crowns on primary teeth
- Identify anatomical features, recognise abnormalities and interpret common pathology
- Carry out oral cancer screening
- Additional procedures on completion of appropriate training
- Carry out tooth whitening to the prescription of a dentist
- Remove sutures after the wound has been checked by a dentist
- Practice procedures and protocols
- Follow practice procedures for infection prevention and control
- Actively develop good lines of communication with the dentist/s to ensure the best treatment of the patients
- Work with the principal to develop the practice and implement the business plan
- Provide treatment for patients in line with the practice schedule and appointment system
- Attend practice meetings and training sessions when requested to do so
- Keep up to date with health and safety requirements
- Assist in other areas of the practice, including administration if required to do so
- Attend all practice meetings as requested
