Job description

The Deputy Headteacher of the Nursery andJunior School will be compassionate and caring, and an able communicator with a positive, encouraging and collaborative style. They will work effectively with colleagues across the whole school, recognising and supporting everyone’s unique strengths and challenges.  

The Deputy Headteacher should be wholly committed to The Edinburgh Academy’s Mission and Values and is responsible for promoting an excellent quality of learning and teaching, setting high expectations, and monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of learning throughout the Junior School.

The Deputy Headteacher of the Junior School and Nursery will be interested in, and engage fully in, the life of The whole school, including the co-curricular programme and at all times of The week, including Saturdays. Applications are welcome from well-qualified graduates with a proven record of excellence in the classroom and leadership experience. Though it will be essential to have impressive experience and qualifications, the intention is to appoint the right person, and not necessarily the person who best fits a pre-determined set of skills. This is a very important and demanding leadership role, of crucial importance to the wellbeing of TheJunior School and Nursery.

The Deputy Headteacher of the Junior School is a member of The Whole School Senior Management Team. The structure of The SMT is designed to allow for flexibility in assigning strategic and day-to-day responsibilities. The School SMT consists of:

Remuneration

The salary for this post will be dependent on the skills and experience of The individual appointed and will be attractive to the right candidate. The terms and conditions will be discussed at the interview.

Availability:

The post is available from the week commencing 12th August 2024. An earlier start, such as in the Summer Term 2024, can be discussed at the interview stage.

Main ResponsibilitiesDuties Relating to the Curriculum and Learning and Teaching:

Curriculum and Planning


Monitor and asses the effectiveness of The curriculum at all levels
Work in collaboration with the Deputy Rector (Learning and Teaching) and Senior Deputy Rector (Director of Studies) to ensure a coherent and progressive learning experience for children as they move from Junior School to Senior School 
Engage all staff in the creation, consistent implementation and improvement in schemes of work and curriculum plans which encapsulate key school learning strategies
Produce the annual timetable ensuring appropriate time is allocated for all subject areas
Support the development of a co-ordinated approach to calendar planning that provides a focus in relation school events and activities for effective learning and teaching across the academic year
Contribute actively to whole school and Court level learning and teaching committees, and ensure decisions taken at this level are appropriately shared with teaching colleagues
Keep abreast of new curricular initiatives and lead a school response to these in line with whole school policy and values


Teaching for Effective Learning and Meeting Learning Needs


Provide regular feedback for colleagues in a way that recognises good practice and supports their progress against professional and performance management objectives resulting in a tangible impact on pupil learning.
Support the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to develop and administer strategies for quality assurance
Work in close collaboration with Junior School Heads of department to procure suitable learning and teaching resources to support learning outcomes throughout the Junior School
Promote the effective use of e-learning and have an overview of The digital academic resources


Assessment for Learning, Managing Information and Partnerships with Learners and Parents


Manage the use of assessment information across the school to identify and plan future learning and policy decisions
Work closely with the MIS & Data Manager to ensure relevant data is stored appropriately in iSams
Implement the reporting and assessment cycle in conjunction with the Senior School taking cognisance of any whole school approach to reporting
Organise Standardised Testing for Primary 3-6, analysing the results annually and implementing any necessary resulting actions
Manage effectively the production of formal academic reports which are shared with parents on an annual basis
Arrange Parent Interview Evenings 


Duties Relating to Staff Professional Learning


Support the Headteacher carrying out PRD
Use a coaching approach to support colleagues in their professional development and career long professional learning in line with the Professional Standards as specified by GTCS
Plan, organise and deliver staff meetings and in-service training for Junior School Staff in collaboration with the Headteacher and Deputy Rector (Learning and Teaching)
Support the induction of new Junior School staff at the beginning of each Academic Session


Duties Relating to Management and Use of Resources and Space


Liaise with the Headteacher regarding the fabric and appearance of TheJunior School
Ensure, with the support of Heads of Department and Specialist Teachers, that all display areas are of a high standard and reflect learning and teaching and The core aims of The School
Ensure appropriate room allocation for teaching
Organise duty rotas for playground supervision and The smooth running of The lunch hall


Duties Relating to Leadership, Expectations and Promoting Achievement


Represent the Junior School through attendance at the Whole School Senior Management Team and other appropriate Court meetings
Assist the Rector and Headteacher in the creation of an annual School Improvement Plan and support the Headteacher in overseeing departmental improvement plans
Be fully committed to the School’s Positive Behaviour Policy, role model the expected staff behaviours and support staff in maintaining a sound, consistent and compassionate approach to pupil behaviour
Contribute to and promote the collegiate philosophy which underpins activities at the Edinburgh Academy, delegating responsibilities as appropriate
Provide guidance and support to members of staff in ensuring the Health and Wellbeing of all children
Line manage the Junior School Specialist Teachers (including PE, Music, Art, Science and Modern Foreign Languages)
Sit on the Whole School Marketing Committee and contribute to the school’s overall marketing and communications strategy


Other Significant Duties


Act as the Junior School’s Child Protection Coordinator working closely in this regard with the Deputy Rector (Pastoral) in the Senior School. The CPC should report directly to the Headteacher about any child protection concerns.  The Edinburgh Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
Be conscious at all times of The importance of The external image of The School and act in a professional and constructive manner with pupils, parents and external agencies
Teach a Maths Set within the Upper Primary Department
Participate in the wider school programme of co-curricular activities
Take responsibility for coordinating Pupil Leadership and Pupil Voice opportunities in the Junior School
Carry out any other duties and to assume any other responsibilities as the Headteacher or Rector shall from time to time reasonably request


Reporting

The Deputy Headteacher will report to the Headteacher on all aspects of Their remit.

Have experience of planning, managing and evaluating change in a Junior School
Demonstrate a commitment to professional learning and have a good awareness of current educational trends and developments
Demonstrate a commitment towards ensuring pupil wellbeing

About the school/organisationThe Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
