Deputy Technical Manager
Grade 6, 32,765 - 35,523 (inclusive of local weighting) depending on experience. Full time. Permanent. Based at Hertford Theatre. Closing date is Friday 26th January 2024 at midnight.
About the role
A rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced Deputy Technical Manager has become available to work at Hertford Theatre as part of the new team relaunching the building after a 4-year hiatus and a 24m redevelopment. This is an exciting time for you to join us and develop your career as we seek to strengthen and deepen the programme of films, theatre, live events and community work in our 550-seat theatre, 150-seat studio theatre, dance studio, community room and 3 dedicated cinemas.
The ambitious and highly professional team at Hertford Theatre is looking for someone to join them who is committed to excellence in their work, ensuring the smooth delivery of a broad range of theatre, film and community events. If successful, you will work across all technical aspects of the new operation to ensure the cultural and commercial success of the programme in line with the business plan.
Some of the key responsibilities include:
- Support the Technical and Production Manager, in partnership with Theatre Projects and Charcoal Blue, with the procurement and installation of all new technical theatre and cinema equipment in the new building.
- Support the Technical and Production Manager in the planning, development, and delivery of all aspects of the technical offer including theatre, cinema and community events.
- Work with the Technical and Production Manager to ensure all visiting productions, hires and events are adequately staffed and resourced.
- In conjunction with the Technical and Production Manager, support the Operations and Hospitality Manager in relation to all aspects of statutory Health and Safety compliance across the building with particular attention to areas relating to stages, screens and auditoria.
- In conjunction with the Technical and Production Manager, support the Operations and Hospitality Manager in relation to risk assessments and fire risk assessments across the building with particular attention to areas relating to stages, screens and auditoria.
- Support the development and management of an annual maintenance and testing plan for any/all appropriate technical equipment including annual PAT testing.
- Ensure, in conjunction with the Technical and Production Manager, all rigging and lifting equipment is inspected according to LOLER regulations.
- To be jointly responsible, with the Technical and Production Manager, for Main Auditorium and Studio presentations and layouts.
- Act as appointed by the Technical and Production Manager in any role on any visiting or in-house productions including the Christmas show.
- Assist and lead on fit ups and get outs as required.
- To duty manage the building as required.
- Maintain membership of, and involvement with, any relevant and valuable networks.
About you
This role will suit an ambitious, experienced Technical Theatre professional who is keen to make their mark on a significant, new arts building in Hertfordshire. If you are an enthusiastic team player with a capacity to work independently where necessary, have an eye for detail and are well-networked in the technical theatre and film sectors then this role is for you.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience of Technical and/or Production management across a range of live events, broadcasts and, ideally, cinema.
- Experience of managing a technical team within an arts or cultural setting.
- Experience of managing a maintenance programme of technical theatre equipment, stage engineering and cinema equipment.
- Ability to read lighting, sound and stage design plans.
- Up to date knowledge of Technical Theatre risk assessments and Health and Safety issues.
- It would be desirable if the candidate had a recognised qualification in BS 7909 as well as rope access training.
