An exciting opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and enthusiastic individual to join our school as a technician in our Design and Technology department. We seek to appoint a passionate person to join our busy department. The Design & Technology departments comprises of the teaching of Design & Technology GCSE to A-Level Product Design. The role of a technician is to support the department in functioning within all aspects of Health & Safety, preparation of materials, working with small groups of students and maintenance of equipment.

The technician is responsible to the Subject Leader of Design & Technology for:

  • The safe and correct preparation of materials and resources as specified by the teaching staff.
  • The safe and correct storage of all tools, equipment and materials.
  • Monitoring and maintaining all safety equipment.
  • Routine cleaning, maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Manufacturing pieces of work for classroom use.
  • Specialist cleaning and supervision of the machine areas and the Design & Technology teaching rooms.
  • Maintaining an accurate inventory of department equipment.
  • Manage stock control of consumables.
  • Co-ordinating departmental stock re-ordering, utilising appropriate computer programmes (MS Office).
  • Receiving and checking stock deliveries and signing off receipt of goods.
  • Providing technical advice to staff and assist students where appropriate.
  • In addition, it would be beneficial if the technician could also:
  • Assisting and instructing pupils in basic 2D and 3D skills, including the use of CAD/CAM
  • Preparing and putting up display work.
  • Organising/setting up exhibitions.
  • Provide Health and Safety advice in relation to the Design Technology equipment.

Ideally, the candidate would have experience in some or all areas of D&T but full on the job training will be provided. You will need to be organised and be able to take your own initiative, you will need to be able to follow instructions and work flexibly across all the areas of the department.

Supporting the DT Department

  • Monitor the condition and supply of all equipment and services within the department.
  • Ordering materials for the department. Stock control, organising and maintaining an inventory of all departmental consumables, keeping staff informed as materials become depleted.
  • Organising and implementing an ongoing planned maintenance system for all department equipment including Computer Aided Design (CAD) / Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) systems and equipment.
  • Organising and maintaining an inventory of all departmental equipment, keeping HoD and staff informed of any missing or damaged items.
  • Assist teaching staff to ensure that all equipment satisfies and continues to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and subsequent amendments.
  • Supporting Students
  • Supervise students, ensuring their safety and encouraging students to interact with others, to engage in activities led by the teacher, and to act independently. This may on occasion involve working in areas of the school other that the DT Department.
  • Establish good relationships with students, acting as role model, reporting progress and achievements to teacher as agreed.
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
  • Supporting Teaching Staff
  • To assist teachers by supporting students in their learning in order to ensure their continuing educational development.
  • To assist teachers in creating an attractive learning environment to ensure students spend their school life in stimulating surroundings.
  • Ensure the classroom is set for lessons as directed, clearing afterwards and assisting with display of students’ work.
  • Assist the teacher in developing effective methods of explaining basic ICT applications and supporting students in their use.
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support students to achieve learning goals.
  • Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.

Supporting the School

  • Demonstrate awareness of the school’s educational and behavioural policies for developing students.
  • Accompany teaching staff and students on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Attend Health and Safety meetings and discussions, which contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the department and the school.
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, health & safety, security, confidentiality and data protection reporting all concerns to the appropriate person as agreed.
  • Be aware of and support diversity and ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Appreciate and support the work of other professionals.
  • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
  • Participate in the school’s performance appraisal/ performance related pay/performance development scheme in order to develop and enhance personal and service performance.
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested by the Head Teacher.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A relevant degree or certification in design, technology, or a related field.
  • Experience: Prior experience in a similar role, especially in an educational setting, is advantageous.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong proficiency in operating and maintaining CAD/CAM equipment and variety of workshop tools and machinery.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication skills to interact with faculty, students, and external vendors.
  • Organisational Skills: Excellent organisational skills to manage inventory, conduct maintenance schedules, and coordinate resources.
  • Safety Consciousness: A keen awareness and commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
