Job description

We have a great opportunity for a Digital Engineer to join us. As Digital Engineer you will provide subject matter expertise, change and maintenance related activities for the company's services within the Apps and Automation team in Data and Analytics


Job Accountabilities


  • To ensure the Health, Safety and Wellbeing management framework is embedded in all activities and our Health and Safety belief statement is a reality
  • To work as part of the Apps and Automation team to deliver new and enhance existing web and mobile apps to drive process improvements across United Utilities
  • Provide operational support for the web and mobile apps already in service
  • Typically a member of a team of 4 – 8 people
  • May provide on the job training and support to junior team members and will work under the technical guidance of the Lead Digital Engineer
  • No budget responsibility but will be expected to input into providing reliable work estimates.
  • Some assignments may require standby and callout activities
  • Typically involved with analysis, design and development work for delivery and support of web and mobile application solutions
  • Ability to work with end users to design simple to medium complexity solutions to solve business problems, including understanding business requirements and offering options, balancing long term costs and desired business benefits and translate these into clear and tangible IT outcomes
  • Develop solutions in line with coding standards and good practice, contributing to regular code reviews and maintaining and working to security and quality standards. Carry out peer reviews and reviews output from more junior team members in line with quality methods.
  • Contribute to the planning and monitoring of work through the sprint ceremonies including providing daily progress reports in line with agile project reporting requirements e.g. at stand ups or in JIRA and collaborating at sprint retrospective and sprint planning.
  • Design and execute testing activities within the team to assure software/applications quality.
  • Apply a detailed knowledge of documentation standards to maintain and review library of appropriate functional, technical and operational documents
  • Assist with tracing and resolving issues within existing and new applications working across the full stack, client and server side in order to provide a reliable service to our customers including maintaining a proactive dialogue with internal customers, responding to feedback appropriately, to maximise customer satisfaction.
  • Perform, co-ordinate and oversee maintenance activities to assure ongoing performance and availability to achieve service measures
  • Monitoring of external trends with recommendations for improvements and innovation ideas within the product area.


Knowledge and Skills


  • Formal accreditation, degree level qualification or significant experience gained through formal training and the successful application of the relevant skills
  • Detailed knowledge of the application architecture, principles and standards in web and mobile app development using MEAN stack (including Angular 2+/io , Typescript, Cordova / Phone gap)
  • Experience of working across the front and back end technologies around web and mobile technologies
  • Experience of building & maintaining build pipelines for web and mobile apps - including Atlassian Bamboo for coordinating builds using the technologies above and Android Studio / platform build tools and MS PowerShell
  • Experience of working with an industry standard source control (e.g. Git) and understanding of approach to using branching and pull requests
  • Experience using both SQL & NoSQL databases
  • Experience of consuming / providing data to other systems both interactively and as part of a batch, using a variety of techniques and technologies including direct database links, file access and REST APIs
  • Demonstrable problem solving skills to assist with tracing and resolving issues within existing and new applications working across the full stack, client and server side
  • Good knowledge of the application development lifecycle and related methodologies for rapid, iterative development (e.g. SCRUM and Agile)
  • Good understanding of the application of ITIL processes within a DevOps environment
  • Understanding of security risks and ability to code to minimise risk (e.g. in line with UK Cyber Essentials and WASP best practice)
  • Some experience of business change in the context of delivering technical projects
  • Capable of engaging with end users' needs and describing benefits of new technologies and digitisation with demonstrable experience of supporting at customer meetings e.g. support requirements capture workshops, walkthrough own prototype designs, understanding business processes
