Job description
Operating as an independent charity, the RWA (Royal West of England Academy) is Bristol’s original public art gallery, housed in its own, purpose-built, landmark building at the heart of the city’s academic quarter.
As the RWA’s Chief Executive, the Director has overall responsibility for the organisation, including oversight of financial planning and governance, development, public programming, partnerships, and outreach. The role encompasses a broad portfolio of responsibilities and requires the exercise of the skills and competencies to match them.
This is an exciting moment to join the RWA as it enters its next phase, after a highly successful decade under the tenure of Alison Bevan, during which time it has transformed into one of the West of England's best-loved and most impactful cultural institutions.
Reporting to the Board of Trustees and supported by the senior management team, the Director is responsible for the leadership of the organisation, employee wellbeing and ensuring the business remains resilient and can sustain long-term success.
A critical activity for this role is managing the various stakeholders collectively to deliver its vision of being a place that welcomes, inspires, and enriches the lives of all people from all communities and all backgrounds through Art and Creativity.
Following a transformation project completed in 2022, the Director will lead the RWA through its next phase of development and change, evolving a sustainable, values-driven business model ensuring future sustainability while seeking opportunities to capitalise on the vast well of untapped potential this extraordinary institution still offers.
