About the Role

As a Driver Trainer, you will play an essential role in elevating our standards of driving and awareness.

Your commitment to excellence will not only enhance our operational efficiency but also significantly reduce Whistl's exposure to risks and costs.

Your responsibilities for this Driver Trainer role will include but not be limited to:

  • Driving standards to reduce risk and cost through a culture of road safety and continuous improvement.
  • Ensuring drivers comply with legal obligations, driving the business to exceed customer expectations.
  • Completing and updating the Driver Profile System, handling additions and removals.
  • Assessing new drivers for capability and professionalism to join Whistl.
  • Conducting comprehensive driver inductions.
  • Proactively carrying out annual refresher training for ALL HGV and van drivers, providing feedback and additional training as needed.
  • Completing incident refresher training within seven working days of an incident.
  • Conducting supervisory checks.
  • Inputting and analysing data from the Convey/TMS system.
  • Implementing additional training and assessments for drivers with repeated Tachograph infringements.
  • Keeping ALL of the Training Matrix up to date.
  • Monitoring Isotrak while following the WDT 009 Isotrak Procedure.
  • Conducting Driver's Hours & WTD training with drivers having a poor infringement rate.
  • Ensuring drivers undergo progressive training with a focus on road safety, vulnerable road users, defensive driving, and slow-speed manoeuvring.
  • Supporting the Transport Teams in investigating all vehicle incidents and near misses.
  • Investigating driving complaints following the WDT 007 Driving Complaint Procedure.
  • Ensuring all drivers receive vehicle familiarisation training on relevant vehicles.
  • Communicating with managers and staff to ensure driver availability for training.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of the Working Time Regulations, Tachograph Rules, and the Highway Code.
  • Complying with all Health, Safety, HR, and Environmental policies and procedures.
  • Completing DCPC training for all in-scope drivers.
  • Ensuring the same training is conducted and applied to day shift & night shift drivers.
  • Regularly updating driver training files.
  • Providing driver manual handling training.

Additional Information

The working hours for this Driver Trainer role are Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.
Flexibility is required in terms of working hours to support the needs of 24-hour operation.


Essential Skills
  • Previous experience in the transportation industry or a similar position
  • HGV Class C+E Licence (Maximum 3 points)
  • A proven track record in delivering driver training to a high standard
  • IT proficient
  • Previous experience working with telematics, convey and tracking software
  • HGV Driver assessor/instructor qualification (IAM, DSA, RTITB) or equivalent
  • AET - PTTLS or equivalent, to instruct DCPC
  • Able to provide support away from the normal location of work on occasion as required by the business
