Job Description

EC&I Engineer - Technologies

Full Time, Hybrid

Derby

Why Rolls-Royce?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer to join our Electrical Controls and Instrumentation Systems and Safety Department at Rolls-Royce Submarines.

We're a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority.

Join us and we'll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.

As well as developing the system design, safety case and information assurance case for the EC&I systems for the Dreadnought and other classes of submarines, the EC&I Systems and Safety team also manages the EC&I technology strategy and technology development programme. You will be involved in development of technologies to support future class submarine EC&I systems as well as the wider Submarines business.

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home or another remote location. It's a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we're all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week

What you will be doing:

You will be working as part of the EC&I Technologies team, supporting R&T programmes with responsibilities that include:

  • Undertaking stakeholder engagement and requirements elicitation activities.
  • Developing EC&I technologies from concept to prototype. This will involve specifying, developing, prototyping, validating and delivering technology solutions in the context of highly challenging applications.
  • Developing high quality system models and machine learning models for use in safety critical applications
  • Horizon Scanning to identify and assess emerging technologies from external sources across various technology domains.
  • Preparing technical reports and documentation to a standard compatible with engineering best practice.

Who we're looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

Required:

  • HND / Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent level of continuous professional development and experience.
  • Experience in requirements capture/analysis and other aspects of Systems Engineering.
  • A good understanding of the product design lifecycle.
  • Professional attitude and strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

Preferable:

  • Technical understanding of electrical/electronic/C&I systems.
  • Experience in the nuclear sector or another highly regulated industry.
  • Understanding and ideally practical experience with C, C++ and Python.
  • Experience with machine learning tools/frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering and Mathworks tools (Simulink and MATLAB).

We are an equal opportunities employer. We're committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we'll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
