Our Southampton port is the largest export port in the UK providing a critical link to our goal of Keeping Britain Trading! Annually we handle 900,000 vehicles, accepting 2 million cruise passengers, and handle exports in excess of £40Bn through the 2nd largest container terminal in the UK.


Following our recent acquisition of the Solent Gateway we have need for additional experienced Electrical Technicians to cover both the Port Of Southampton and our sites at Marchwood and Eling. Due to the level of current and planned activity we're looking to recruit apprentice trained electrical technicians with strong planned and reactive maintenance experience. You should have experience of PLC fault finding (Siemens ideally) and maintaining infrastructure assets. The role will involve supporting a schedule of Critical Safety System checks and Preventative Maintenance activity on a range of port side Cranes, Mobile Structures and fixed infrastructure including general office buildings and bespoke cruise terminals. Additionally you will also be expected to carry out pre-emptive and reactive works to ensure the key assets and infrastructure across the port’s estate remain operational.


You'll need experience of maintaining safety system protected equipment (such as lifts, escalators, conveyors, fixed/moving platforms). Will need to possess an understanding of PUWER and LOLER and should be able to fault find and repair PLC/SCADA systems. Experience of working within the heavy industry sector, working for an OEM or repairing cranes, heavy plant is preferred.


Accountabilities:

  • Ensure compliance with Health Safety and Environmental requirements and other legislation including contributing to the development and review of Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work, work with the Compliance Team to deliver safety around the port areas.
  • Carry out electrical maintenance works to a variety of assets in a diligent and timely manner in order to meet the requirements of port operations both individually and as part of a larger team (including working with other departments/ third party contractors as required).
  • Communicate during servicing operations and the repair of plant and equipment providing required scope of works and parts required etc.
  • Contribute to a continual improvement culture amongst staff, through the development of improved systems/procedures that will drive forward all aspects of the port’s operation.
  • Provide support and guidance to the Semi-Skilled Engineers and Apprentices in undertaking the works in a safe, cost-effective and timely manner.

Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum of a Level 3 Electrical Engineering qualification
  • Capable of fault-finding in electrical circuits and PLC control panels within plant and equipment, including working with schematics.
  • Sound knowledge of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Service and Customer driven with good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Confident at working at height and/or around water.
  • Knowledge of industrial LV electrical distribution circuits and protection. (Ideal)
  • Familiar with the use of Siemens PLC units. (Ideal)
  • Experience of installations within a COMPEX environment. (Ideal)

The role is working days only with a voluntary on-call roster for out of hour reactive maintenance including a stand-by payment and minimum paid hours per call out.
