EMC Consultant and Test Engineer
Crawley - Hybrid

Our Test Engineering teams operate as internal subject matter experts across a wide array of Thales programmes, providing key strategic guidance and expertise to support delivery across existing programmes and new product development. This includes business domains within Aerospace/Avionics, Intelligence, Underwater Systems and Optronics.

In this role, you will operate and consult across an array of complex products to ensure EMC requirements are captured, understood and design/developed in consideration of these factors. The responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Providing key strategic guidance to product development activities such as:
  • EMC design, troubleshooting, defining the Electromagnetic Environment for the product and How to apply the relevant EMC standards to a product
  • Generate EMC Control & Test plans including Technical justifications and analysis of EMC results.
  • Lead / Assist in the Lab with measurements when necessary
  • Lead and coordinate EMC test readiness activities for projects to ensure successful transition into test.
  • Work with System and Hardware Engineers to implement EMC design practices
  • Support Project Reviews including explaining EMC with projects team members , for whom EMC is not their prime subject and managing internal Customer expectations concerning product design
  • Review of sub-contractors EMC test reports

Skills and experience required

  • Applied experience in designing for EMC, including improving EMC failures under formal test and understanding the necessary components of a project EMC control plan.
  • Understanding and implementing of best EMC design practices relating to subjects such as earthing and bonding, shielding techniques and theory, cable screening and installation practices, filtering etc.
  • An understanding of the electromagnetic properties of lightning and other EMP phenomena.
  • An awareness and experience in latest EMC product technology
  • Able to assess applicability of EMC requirements and conduct analysis into suitability of requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of EMC testing standards and matching hands-on measurement experience.

Desirable experience

  • Awareness of typical natural and man-made EMC environments for land, sea and air military systems.
  • Awareness of how to apply the EMC directive to military equipment and take the technical file route to compliance.
  • Understanding of RF Engineering.
  • Awareness of measurement techniques for DEF STAN 59-411, MIL STD 461, AECTP 250 & 500 and commercial testing

Security Clearance statement:

Due to the sensitive nature of much of the work, all applicants must be eligible for Security Clearance and due to the nature of projects we require candidates who can are eligible for Security Clearance (SC level minimum). This typically requires a minimum of 3-years based in the UK as the minimum criteria.
