Energetics & Effectiveness Engineer
Location: Belfast or Templecombe

About the team
You will be embedded in a team of missile specialists and will work across a number of programs supporting bids, studies and programs developing solutions to meet customer needs. As a member of the missile team you will contribute to the development of effector concepts & energetics sub-system development roadmaps. You will work with delivery teams to ensure that development is aligned with customer needs.
You will be working alongside a group of technically gifted employees who bring together Thales products and external partner products to meet the customer needs. You and the team will be responsible for leading development of innovative, agile, end-to-end solutions. Shape and cohere user, customer and market understanding, and assure delivery of solutions that are coherent with the IAS & Thales Business Strategy and meet customer needs.

Thales is a world leader in Air Defence and Surface Attack systems, bringing together a unique combination of Thales and Partner products to deliver Weapon Systems that meet our customer's needs. A key element of these systems are the missile products that Thales specialise in developing.
An opportunity has arisen to join our Missile Capability team within the Technical Directorate, working on the design and development of innovative missile energetics and effectiveness solutions to meet customer requirements and business needs.
The role covers all aspects of the Energetics & Effectiveness lifecycle, from requirements capture and analysis through solution definition, concept studies, modelling and simulation, design and development.
Key responsibilities:
As part of the IAS (Integrated Airspace protection Systems) Solutions Missile Capability team, your role will involve internal and external customer interaction.
Responsibilities will include:
  • Develop & maintain mathematical models of the energetic systems in our existing missile products.
  • Develop and maintain a systems effectiveness and warhead lethality capability suitable for current and emerging threats.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the physical properties of energetic materials, the latest technological developments in the field & future roadmaps including all aspects of production, testing & exploitation.
  • Build & maintain long term relationships with customers, partners, and suppliers and work with them to validate Thales' models.
  • Develop specifications for energetic components of our future missile products in accordance with the relevant standards and certification processes.
  • Provide technical oversight & governance, subject matter expertise and training to colleagues.
  • Deliver briefings & presentations as required to technical forums both internally and externally.

About You
You will have a relevant degree in a numerate or engineering discipline in addition to good analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities. You will have experience working within the Defence or Aerospace industries ideally with significant experience of energetics systems, warhead technology and effectiveness in particular. You will have experience of mathematical modelling and use of MATLAB/Simulink or similar toolsets for analysis of complex systems and data sets. You will have a solid understanding and preferably practical experience of the application of Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics to the modelling of energetic components and their effectiveness.
