Job description

Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) is the new brand of Magnox Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About the role

"The Energy and Carbon Manager will lead the company’s drive to Net Zero with responsibility for developing, implementing and overseeing the strategic approach for energy and carbon management during the full decommissioning life cycle.

In so doing they will provide professional advice and guidance to Sites, Functions and the Executive in the specific area of energy management and carbon reduction. Develop and maintain Company management arrangements for energy management and carbon reduction, aligned to recognised industry standards. Implement monitoring arrangements and advise on performance against these Company arrangements as well as regulatory and legislative requirements. They will seek to benchmark performance against other operators within the NDA group and similar industries. Identify where energy/carbon efficiency needs to be improved and ensure that any changes to operations, activities and behaviours needed to achieve this are implemented in an appropriate way and in a timely manner."

Key Deliverables:

  • Creates and maintains strategic plans on carbon reduction and energy management including opportunities for renewable energy installations.
  • Define company approach to energy management and carbon reduction through the development of, and implementation of, company management arrangements consistent with recognised standards such as ISO50001 and PAS 2080.
  • Ensures that consideration of energy efficiency and carbon reduction is appropriately integrated into wider management arrangements and that risks and opportunities are adequately represented in company processes.
  • Ensures compliance with current and emergent legislative requirements relating to carbon emissions and energy efficiency.
  • Manages the process for measuring and reporting the Company’s carbon footprint and produces statutory carbon reports as required.
  • Support Supply Chain with reductions in Scope 3 emissions through advice and guidance.
  • Manages training, awareness, and communications on carbon literacy and energy efficiency to lead behavioural reductions.
  • Provide authoritative advice to sites and programmes to optimise energy performance in design and operation to carbon emissions.
  • Trending and analysis of utility data to identify leaks, significant users, and issues.
  • Identifies and prioritises energy and carbon reduction opportunities at a Company and site level to maximise impact.
  • Develop and monitor appropriate key performance indicators and company metrics for energy and carbon performance.
  • Support the delivery of relevant aspects of the company Sustainability Strategy (M-003).
  • Lead the Energy Management Team and coordinate site Energy Efficiency Officers.
  • Supports delivery of goals and objectives associated with carbon emissions in the Sustainability Strategy to time and cost.
  • Support the effective deployment of company-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures ensuring that at all times the business remains compliant. This includes, but is not limited to, the need to comply with the company’s Equality and Diversity Policy and undertake identified associated learning and development activities.
  • Work with Functions, Programmes and the supply chain to ensure effective delivery of identified energy and carbon improvements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Educated to degree / professional qualification in a relevant discipline (Essential)
  • A proven track record of delivering carbon and energy efficiencies in a similarly complex industry (Essential)
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of relevant standards and legislation (Essential)
  • Range of experience at nuclear sites or other high hazard industries in own specialism.
  • Experience of managing within a changing complex, challenging environment (Desirable)
  • Leadership training (Desirable)
  • Chartered Membership of the Energy Institute or other relevant body (Desirable)

Please note the successful candidate will need to be located within a commutable distance of one of our NRS sites and will be expected to work there a minimum of 2 days per week.

Please also note this role is SP50, therefor the salary entry point will be £58,297.

Benefits Package

  • Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) staff should refer to the document titled “Spot Point v Grade alignment” available on SharePoint for more information on how the grade structure aligns to Spot Points.
  • Flexible working – where possible.
  • The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

Please be aware this role holder requires security clearance, or the ability to obtain said clearance.

There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
