Centrica Energy Storage (CES) is a key Business Unit within the Centrica group and operates large scale natural gas storage and production facilities in East Yorkshire, across its sites at Easington and an offshore platform in the North Sea. CES has Energy Transition ambitions, looking to create an integrated energy hub, not only to meet our own net zero ambition, but to provide infrastructure which supports UK energy security and regulatory Energy Transition commitments. Location - Hessle, Hull / Flexible home working

This is a great opportunity to join CES where you will be leading the flagship £2bn Rough Redevelopment project to implement the company’s strategic ambition of transforming its existing assets from fossil fuel to the provision of low carbon hydrogen storage as part of a new energy hub in the Humber cluster.

  • Lead the (FEL-3) Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) programme to take forward into implementation and execution.
  • Responsible for developing all strategic and underpinning deliverables for a successful Final Investment Decision (FID), including project delivery model, contracting strategy, cost estimates, schedules, risk management strategies and stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Recruit and develop a high performing and competent integrated team making best use of in-house and outsourced service provider resources
  • Form and nurture key / strategic supplier relationships to support and compliment CES+’s capabilities and delivery of major capital projects.
  • Development and implementation of innovative and ‘fit for purpose’ project systems, processes and procedures for robust delivery of all project activities and advance preparations for execution phases.
  • Support the CES MD with stakeholder management to influence UK Government energy policy, specifically designing a new contract framework for a regulatory support model relating to long duration energy storage (gas and hydrogen) and prepare technical elements of bids for associated funding or Government business model tendering processes.
  • Establishes the role as the CES senior leader in Energy Transition by nurturing internal and external stakeholder relationships in the pursuit of business objectives.

Accountabilities

  • Setting standards for and ensuring compliance with process and HSE requirements within a major capital project lifecycle.
  • Developing, sustaining and driving a culture that stimulates high levels of process safety performance.
  • Present and explain project value drivers and execution risk management to a broad range of stakeholders to educate, influence and gain alignment on key decision making.
  • Defining organisational capability and capacity, set-up and sourcing of a high performance team and active coaching and developing of individual team members.
  • Ensure implementation of the appropriate Governance and Assurance framework for Energy Transition projects in accordance with company standards.
  • Implementation of a ‘fit for purpose’ capital projects management system and associated processes, procedures and practices.
  • Ensure appropriate statutory, regulatory and technical standards are applied to the FEED, contract tendering, selection and award.
  • Development and control of capital work programme and budgets (WP&B) and maintaining appropriate project controls and reporting of all activities.
  • Completion of stage gate deliverables and assurance requirements and presenting projects for stage gate approval to gatekeeper(s) and senior stakeholders.
  • Accountable for the quality, cost and timely delivery of project work contracted to suppliers, service companies and contractors involved in Energy Transition projects.
  • Ensuring that operational learning is reflected in development concepts and project delivery practices.
  • Develop and leverage appropriate networks for strategic purposes including maintaining relationships with key Centrica Group, Government Agencies and Industry bodies.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Essential - Educated to degree level in a technical subject.
  • Desirable -  Chartered Engineer and Full Member of an Engineering Institute.
  • Desirable - Certified Project management professional.
  • Preferably MBA or other business qualification.
  • >15 years of project leadership and management, preferably within the energy / industrial processing sectors
  • Demonstrable track record in senior leadership positions within a medium to large Operating company or client organisation involved in onshore and offshore development projects.  Service sector experience in similar field an advantage.
  • Must be well practiced and have held accountability for FEL-3 of a major / mega project(s) in the onshore and offshore energy sector.
  • Held accountability for FEL-3 / Execute of a major / mega project in the onshore and offshore energy sector a distinct advantage.
  • Proven track record delivering complex projects and work programmes working across and integrating all development functions from subsurface, wells, facilities, operations, HSEQ, commercial, legal etc.
  • Awareness and experience in the nascent hydrogen energy sector an advantage
