About the job:
This is a genuine opportunity to champion the environmental sustainability agenda with a focus on energy efficiency, carbon reporting and decarbonisation. This senior management role will also lead a small team to ensure all environmental aspects are managed and continuous improvement promoted across the business.
You will work in partnership with other areas of the business to ensure environment and energy best practices are embedded throughout GWR to help shape and achieve the targets outlined in the National Rail Contract.
Key to this role will be the development of action plans to deliver against our Net Zero commitment. You will be responsible for the continual improvement of data capture and reporting to ensure the business understands the environmental and carbon impact from energy consumption.
This role will be responsible for compliance with all environment, energy and carbon related legislation and industry standards.
A large part of this role will involve stakeholder engagement with both internal and external parties such as wider FirstGroup colleagues, suppliers, local authorities, regulators and various industry groups. Collaboration will be needed to mitigate risks and identify opportunities for synergies, efficiencies and innovation.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Lead, maintain and improve the GWR Environment and Energy Management System across the organisation, maintaining the ISO 14001 and 50001 standards.
- Provide leadership and line management to a small team.
- Capture Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions and prepare periodic reports as required by internal and external stakeholders.
- Play an active part in supporting other business functions to implement environment and energy management initiatives, monitoring the potential impact (positive and negative) on performance.
- Provide leadership for the colleague engagement and communications program.
- Collaborate with FirstGroup Train Operating Companies, and industry groups (RSSB) to align approaches and best practices.
- Lead continual improvement of process and procedures in relation to energy efficiency in support of energy reduction targets and wider objectives of carbon strategy.
- Lead on nuisance and noise complaints and assist with any other environmental incidents as necessary
Who are we looking for?
If you have previous Environment and Energy Management experience and enjoy working collaboratively across departments and functions with a variety of stakeholders, then we'd love to hear from you.
Education
- Member of IES/IEMA or other related professional body
- HND or degree in a science or engineering subject or other environmental discipline
- Internal audit qualification preferable but not essential
Job Specific Knowledge & Skills
You'll be an excellent communicator and a passionate advocate for all things Energy and Environment. You'll have a lot of opportunities to proactively seek out improvements and identifying and implementing energy reduction measures across a multi-site portfolio.
You'll bring with you experience in implementing ISO 14001 and 50001 Environment and Energy Management Systems and knowledge of energy and climate change legislation and will continually be horizon scanning for way to improve our credentials.
Location:
Milford House, Swindon but travel across the GWR network to be expected. Flexible working options are available
