The Role
The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager will manage, implement and communicate on Health and Safety and provide leadership, information, advice and guidance on best practice across the business. The ability to prioritise work and deliver within a dynamic and demanding scientific environment to meet challenging deadlines is essential.
Key Responsibilities
• At all times, support the creation and continuation of a culture that prioritises the Health and Safety of our employees. You will rigorously manage non-conformances or contrary behaviours where known and ensure that no actions taken by yourself or others sacrifice safety or quality which could put yourself, others at risk.
• Develop and drive on a strategy to deliver on a behavioural led Health and Safety culture, collaborating with all department heads and Senior Management Team to ensure that this strategy is built into the culture of the company.
• Be a visible role model in all aspects of EHS, displaying visible commitment to the company policies, procedures and processes, through integrity, clear communication, collaboration and continual review and improvement.
• Provide advice, guidance, expertise, training, and support on all matters concerning Environment, Safety and Health.
• Lead the H&S Committee and provide guidance, support and advice.
• Ensure proactive adherence to Environment, Health and Safety, legislative and regulatory requirements to protect the company, satisfy compliance and environmental protection.
• Develop, monitor, and control annual budget for the Environment, Health & Safety function encompassing direct, indirect, and capital expenditure.
• Deploy, maintain, and continually enhance metrics monitoring the ongoing performance, and facilitating the continuous improvement, of the business in terms of Environment, Health & Safety.
• Produce relevant and appropriate reports providing data, commentary, and narrative as required to key stakeholders (internal and external).
• Working with key stakeholders, help develop, maintain, and deliver the company Business Continuity Policy, Processes and Crisis Management Plan to ensure that business risk is known and controlled; and where an event evokes crisis management, crisis is dealt with promptly and continuity is expedient.
• Approves the generation of new risk assessments.
• Approves purchase of hazardous substances.
• Informs the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on all relevant Health and Safety matters, such as RIDDOR, notifications etc.
• Conducts investigations, reports and follows-up on all Health and Safety-related incidents and near misses, or nominates a competent person to deputise.
Requirements
Essential
o Robust demonstrable management experience in EHS in a related scientific business and assist with Business Continuity plans.
o Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal, influencing and networking skills at all levels within the business and with external stakeholders including regulatory bodies.
o Strong and proven leadership skills including people management.
o Strong risk management experience.
o Experience and good understanding of management systems and auditing of them.
o Qualified as a minimum to NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent for Health and Safety and Environment.
o Strong understanding of EHS regulations.
o Possess self-motivation and energy to work autonomously at a strategic and tactical level influencing and continuously driving change and improvements.
Desirable
o GM and biological agents experience.
o Experience in establishing/leading/fostering a behavioural safety culture.
