This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Regulation of some of the most important industries across England. Our National Permitting Service provides a vital technical service across Water, Land and Air to ensure a balance is struck between economic activity and the environment.
Permitting officers will develop significant technical skills, delivering complex workloads whilst maintaining a focus on professional and technical development. You may be working on power generation, recycling, water treatment, climate resilience or one of many other sectors – we will ensure our graduates get opportunities to experience a breadth of regulatory work.
Our Permitting Officers are the next generation of Environmental Regulators, vital across the public and private sector.
We will support our staff to become Chartered with a range of bodies including (but not limited to) CIWM, CIWEM and IEMA.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do, you'll be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The Permitting Service delivers a service for England; we are 550+ people with a wide range of skills and backgrounds who are focussed on making things better. Our teams are based at a number of locations across the country.

Experience/skills required 1
You will be someone with a genuine interest in the environment and how regulation of industry can make a difference, a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific/technical discipline and/or a proven track record (paid or voluntary) of working in the sector.
To be eligible for this role you will need to meet ALL the following criteria:
Criteria 1
  • You are a UK, Commonwealth or EEA (European Economic Area) national

  • You have the right to work in the UK

Criteria 2
  • Must have a minimum of a honours degree in a relevant technical discipline (for instance: Env. Science, Biology, Ecology, Geology, Chemistry)
