The Role

Charles River Discovery have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Health & Safety Manager to join our team. You will be based at our site in either Saffron Walden or Harlow, with occasional travel to our High Peak and Portishead sites.
This opportunity will require you to lead a small international team who are responsible for the effective and efficient management of health and safety, emergency management, policy implementation, reporting, investigations, application of controls, risk assessment and delivery of training. You will be providing strategic and operational input and expertise on EH&S and regulatory compliance and related matters. Also being able to interpret and deal with new legislation and regulations ensuring processes and procedures are in place to guarantee regulatory compliance for UK Discovery.
Main Responsibilities
  • To provide expert EHS advice and support to senior management and all managers and staff within UK Discovery
  • To provide expert BioSafety advice and support to senior management and all managers and staff within UK Discovery
  • Leading investigations into safety and compliance incidents and following up with appropriate action and solutions as needed
  • Leading GMSC committee meetings
  • Ensure timely CU2 applications are dealt with
  • Ensure appropriate processes and procedures are in place to ensure compliance across a number of key areas, such as: BioSafety, PoAO, CITES, Pathogens, Human Tissue Act (England and Wales), Controlled Substances
  • Perform Safety Inspections
  • Manage and review risk assessments
  • Representing the company in interactions and partnering with statutory and regulatory bodies
  • Acting as a role model and mentor for all staff in compliance matters
  • Facilitating the smooth running of the business's operations
  • Carrying out projects as delegated by management, delivering to time and budget
  • Regular interaction with Charles River stakeholders across the business

Qualifications and Experience
  • Ideally, educated to degree level within a scientific discipline
  • Demonstrated advanced experience in safety and compliance in the pharmaceutical or other highly regulated sectors
  • Experience of operating in the EHS and compliance areas
  • Knowledge of interactions with statutory regulators
  • Demonstrated skills as a mentor / trainer
  • Flexible and able to apply strong problem-solving skills to deal competently with issues that come in unexpectedly
  • Able to maintain and stay up to date with regulatory knowledge and sharing of "best practice"
  • Approachable and able to deal with confidential matters with integrity
  • Able to advise, influence and engage site management and colleagues
  • Some experience in additional compliance areas would be advantageous (such as trade compliance, shipping, VAT issues and IoR requirements for goods, hazardous materials and controlled substances)
