Job description

Environmental Health Team Leader

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE POWER OF EMPOWERMENT

About Us

Environmental Health at Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where passionate and expert professionals go above and beyond for their communities every day.

Natasha started her career in the NHS. She came to Westminster to do more for vulnerable people. When a family in her community reached out to her after their heating was cut off, Natasha took their situation seriously. Living in terrible conditions, and reaching desperation, they had nowhere else to turn. Natasha stepped in, holding the landlord to account and getting them to improve conditions for the family. These are the moments that make her the proudest. Now, she uses her expertise and experience to empower others.

The Role

As a Team Leader in Environmental Health, you can make your own powerful contribution to residents and businesses across Westminster. Responsible for managing the operational delivery of a range of key frontline services, you’ll ensure public protection, health, and safety are at the heart of everything you do.

This role directly improves and enhances the quality of life, safety, and wellbeing of our communities, and you’ll play a vital role in ensuring they have the tools they need to thrive.

We have opportunities across a range of departments, available part-time, as a job-share, or full-time. This is because we want the best people for our roles and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.

Our Food and Health and Safety team works to reduce the risk to public health from food purchased, produced or eaten in Westminster. This team also ensures health and safety within venues ranging from places of worship to Theatres.

Our HMO Enforcement team’s mission is to find unlicensed HMOs and improve some of the city’s worst housing conditions, working with partners to ensure conditions are improved and enforcement action is taken.

Our Consultation team provides Environmental Health input into planning and licensing processes. Their work touches many of the major events that take place across the city.

Wherever you join us, you’ll drive efficiencies in your team, supporting and empowering colleagues to develop both for themselves, and for the good of our communities.

Alongside providing leadership to your team, you’ll also contribute to policy development and work towards performance improvement. You can expect to manage diverse projects and programmes, develop and manage partnerships, and work closely with a wide range of stakeholders.

About You

An established professional with a knack for managing people and resources, you’ll be passionate about Environmental Health and improving outcomes for communitie

Whether you are looking for a new challenge in your career or returning to the profession we have a place for you.

You’ll be capable of managing operationally important projects, and of inspiring, motivating and developing a diverse team of professionals. With a background in Environmental Health, advanced relationship management and influencing skills, and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the council and beyond, you’ll be a confident and assured leader to your team.

For roles in our food service you must meet the Food Standards Agency competency framework contained within the Food Law Code of Practice Guidance and be registered with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board (EHORB).

This is a fantastic opportunity to expand your expertise in a local authority that meets the challenge of managing Environmental Health issues across some of the busiest, most diverse and vibrant districts of London.

What we Offer

Westminster is an amazing place. We are home to more than 200,000 residents from all backgrounds, over 50,000 vibrant and vital businesses and three-quarters-of-a-million people work in Westminster.

The salary range for this role is £53,109-£72,669, and we encourage applications from applicants at all stages of their career. Your specific salary will depend on your qualification, skills and experience.

Westminster City Council’s strategy is to work towards a Fairer Westminster. A Fairer Westminster is one in which our communities are at the heart of our decision-making and help to determine the city’s future. If you are invited for interview, you will be asked if you need any reasonable adjustments in order to attend, and we will make these wherever possible.

The Council is committed to achieving diverse shortlists to support our desire to increase the number of staff from underrepresented groups in our workforce. We especially encourage applications from a global majority background and, while the role is open to all applicants, we will utilise the positive action provisions of the Equality Act 2010 to appoint a candidate from a global majority background where there is a choice between two candidates of equal merit.
