Job description

Our people are at the centre of the University’s ‘Our Future’, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and ‘People and Organisational Development’ strategies. Internally, in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, we also have our own Social Responsibility EDI Strategy that puts our staff and students at the heart of what we do.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the School of Natural Sciences as an EDIA Coordinator (Disability). As one of two Schools within the Faculty of Science & Engineering, we acknowledge the need for accessibility to be recognised, accounted for, and embedded into our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion work. We focus on EDIA to ensure accessibility is embedded in our experiences working here as staff, and in studying here as students.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals who are committed to and deeply engaged in EDIA and the value it holds for all. This is one of three Coordinator roles we have in our team. In particular, we are seeking candidates with demonstrable knowledge of the lived experience of disability. This will may include, but is not limited to, physical disabilities and invisible disabilities - e.g., mobility impairments, mental health conditions, chronic illness, and neurodivergence. Gender equality work will also be a focus in each Coordinator role.

While this Coordinator role will focus on Disability and Accessibility, our Coordinators will work together to action change based on the intersection of Disability, Race, LGBTQ+, and Gender. These roles will report to the School’s EDIA Manager.

You will engage others in your specialist area, as well as with EDIA generally, to ensure that EDIA is at the heart of our day-to-day operations. Excellent organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential to support the delivery and implementation of a wide range of projects.

A timeline of our recruitment for this post is as follows;

  • Applications close on 17th March, 23:59pm.
  • Shortlisting will be completed by approx. 27th March.
  • Interview invites will be sent by 29th March.
  • Interviews will be held on 11th April.

When applying for this role, please ensure you list and expressly evidence how you meet each essential criteria for the post in your application.

If you are successful in receiving an interview, we will send questions in advance to all candidates to allow you time to consider your responses to these. These will usually be sent a week in advance.

University of Manchester is an Equal Opportunities Employer. We welcome all applicants and actively encourage those who historically have been underrepresented in Higher Education. This includes but is not limited to: Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and/or otherwise Global Majority applicants, disabled applicants, trans applicants, applicants exiting a career break, care-experienced applicants, and LGB+ applicants.

Our University is positive about flexible working – you can find out more here. Blended working is the norm within the Faculty. Typically, staff are on-site for a minimum of 2 days per week. For the Coordinator Posts, we expect a typical week may consist of 3 days on campus and 2 days at home. Initially, more on-campus time will be expected for forging relationships and getting to know the team. We will always accommodate your accessibility needs for on-campus working.

The University of Manchester has a vibrant Disabled Staff community. In the Faculty, we have 3,819 staff, of whom 5.5% report a disability. In our School, 5.8% of staff report a disability. We have Disabled Staff Networks, including a Neurodivergent Staff Network, at the University, who foster community through events and meetings throughout the year.

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
