Job description

London Office

This opportunity is aimed at undergraduates seeking practical work experience before committing to enter the profession.

We offer the chance to fully understand working life and the unique culture we have at MHA.

This is a paid internship lasting for 10weeks. Please note that this is a competitive application process. This may involve online testing and a formal interview.

We understand that entrepreneurs are driven by vision - and thrive on change. We know the importance of seizing the advantage in a constantly evolving environment. We appreciate the powerful forces that motivate both small & medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and larger enterprises chasing growth.

Our values underpin how our people and clients experience MHA. Through our core values of Service, Teamwork, Attitude and Relationships, we can help you achieve your goals.

Who we are

Here at MHA, we take the time to create great relationships with our clients to become not just their trusted advisers, but valued partners facing the future together.

As a Top 13 firm of chartered accountants, tax and business advisers, we work in partnership with clients ranging from entrepreneurs and individuals to multi-national corporations. We work together to navigate an ever-changing business world and proactively identify the opportunities that tomorrow presents. It’s the reason why we use the line: ‘now, for tomorrow’.

Leveraging our national network of offices, we offer a comprehensive range of financial and business strategy services to clients across the UK, enabling them to achieve profitable growth and build sustainable long-term success.

As the UK Lead member of Baker Tilly International, we have a global reach that allows us to offer our insight and expertise wherever our clients need us to be. We believe this makes us a national and international partner of choice for entrepreneurs and multi-national enterprises across the world. We are a global partner and one of the largest firms in the world.

Our agile and responsive approach means we are always on hand to have the right conversations with clients at the right time, allowing us to identify their goals and business needs both now, and in the future.

Purpose of the role

You will be responsible for performing ESG-related procedures on Audit and assurance engagements and, where appropriate, communicating technical requirements to clients and audit teams, under the supervision of the ESG Audit and Advisory Manager and Sustainability & ESG Technical Director. An understanding of sustainability-related issues across the complete spectrum of environmental, social and governance matters will be important – we are not expecting you to possess a detailed knowledge of these areas, which continue to evolve at pace, but be able to talk to them at a high level. You will need to quickly grasp new concepts and apply a curious / inquisitive mindset to Audit and assurance engagements.

ESG is already proving to be the greatest business challenge of current times with significant risk and opportunity brought not just by climate change but all environmental, social and governance factors that investors, consumers and customers, capital providers, supply chains, colleagues and competitors are now focusing on. The role is specific to this service line only.

The successful candidate will support the development of the portfolio of ESG audit, assurance and Advisory clients by delivering MHA services with relevant audit teams and the ESG Centre of Excellence. Communication with the wider ESG Audit and Advisory team (comprising the ESG Audit and Advisory Manager, Sustainability & ESG Technical Director, ESG Advisory Director, and Head of ESG) will be critical.

Main responsibilities

Audit and Assurance

  • Assess and consider where ESG-related risks might be concentrated in a client’s business, its operating environment and value chain – this information is obtained both through client conversations, review of client confidential information and publicly-available information. Document this assessment succinctly and accurately to facilitate efficient review.
  • Apply intuition, business understanding and an inquisitive mindset to perform substantive procedures under the supervision of the ESG Audit and Advisory Manager and Sustainability & ESG Technical Director.
  • Perform assigned assurance procedures on non-audit assurance engagements, such as internal audit or ISAE (UK) 3000 engagements, under the supervision of the ESG Audit and Advisory Manager or assigned engagement manager.
  • Communicate potential logjams, delays and quality concerns to the ESG Audit and Advisory Manager or Sustainability & ESG Technical Director early on to inform billing and scheduling decisions.
  • Familiarize self with common ESG-related requirements such as Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), Energy Savings and Opportunities Scheme (ESOS), and the UK Climate-related Financial Disclosures (s414CB of Companies Act 2006).
  • Support the ESG Audit and Advisory Manager by attending client meetings and internal meetings where appropriate.

Advisory Services Support & Delivery

  • Support the marketing of our services to targets and clients.
  • Ad-hoc project work which may include compliance or value-added services.

Communications & Development

  • Keep the ESG Audit and Advisory Manager and Sustainability & ESG Technical Director briefed on how assigned work is progressing.
  • Ensure simple, clear and effective communication internally and externally.
  • Maintain dialogue with line manager, reporting upstream and downstream issues as appropriate.
  • Any other compliance matters in line with HR Policies and Procedures.

Entry Requirements

We do not require interns to have a business or financial background. However, we do ask that applicants for our placement programme have at least 112 UCAS points at A-level, or equivalent, all achieved during the same exam year and excluding General Studies, plus are on track to achieve at least a 2:1 degree in any discipline.

Thank you for choosing to apply for one of our 2024 positions at MHA. We are looking forward to hearing more about you!

Our advice is for you to work your way through the application process with care and attention, as the questions you answer as part of your application will allow for our assessors to determine whether they should progress you through to the next stages. This will include online testing and an assessment centre - dependent on the role you are applying for. This is your time to shine!

Give us as much detail as possible, spell check your answers and don't forget to re-read the application before you submit it at the end!

We are looking forward to reading more about your academic background, motivations of starting a career within accountancy and why you have applied to MHA!

Upon application you will be asked to complete some diversity questions. MHA is a committed member of Access Accountancy and as such, we track our diversity stats and actively work to improve on these year on year, looking at new ways to promote our roles to the widest audience. Any data collected is fully anonymised before sharing with any external parties, as per our Data Protection Policy.
