Do you want to lead a multi-disciplined team of Building Conservation, Building Services and Landscape Managers to ensure the care, repair, and enhancement of the National Collection of historic sites and monuments in the North of England?
English Heritage seeks a highly motivated professional who could be from an Architecture / Building Conservation / Engineering / Surveying background (or similar) to lead a team in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, and Derbyshire. We are looking for a resourceful and creative person, who will relish the opportunity to manage a team of project managers and contribute to our ongoing work to achieve operational excellence.
As an Estate Manager, you will lead your team of specialists to ensure the delivery of high-quality comprehensive conservation, maintenance, and customer focused facilities management for English Heritage's National Collection of Historic Properties. You and your team will manage maintenance contractors to deliver a complex programme of cyclical maintenance works and project manage small maintenance, conservation, landscape, and infrastructure projects.
To do this, you will have strong project/contract management skills and a working understanding of health and safety regulations in a construction environment (CDM Regulations etc.), will be competent in operating within the constraints of heritage and planning policies and statutory requirements, and can demonstrate a robust understanding of historic building conservation best practice principles.
The successful person will be an effective written and verbal communicator, able to excel in forging positive relationships with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders, sometimes in challenging situations. A key aspect of the role will be to support your team to get the best out of contractors, ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with English Heritage Trust's standards/policies and within budget.
To support your team's work, you will identify when consultant support is required, work with the Senior Estate Manager to procure and manage specialist services via a Shared Services Agreement from Historic England and appoint any other external specialists that might be required.
As lead for a portfolio of sites, including many castles, country houses, abbeys, and historic landscapes, (some UNESCO World Heritage designated) you will play a key role in ensuring the maintenance of these properties in your team's care are managed to achieve Sustainable Conservation, align with the organisation's Nature Strategy, and are presented to a high standard to enable visitor engagement.
To be considered as an Estate Manager, you will need:
- Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject - e.g. building surveying, engineering, project management or nature conservation and grounds maintenance and experience in maintaining buildings and grounds covering multiple sites.
- Experience of managing planned maintenance and minor works contracts.
- Experience and understanding of buildings and grounds maintenance in a historic environment, including being familiar with current building regulations and statutory requirements in the context of the historic environment.
- Extensive applied knowledge of H&S policies applicable to estate management and the construction sector particularly Construction Design Management Regulations (2015).
- Ability to communicate effectively and write clear and effective reports.
