Do you have a passion for all things L&D/OD/Apprenticeships, plus a proven ability to work under your own initiative to drive the design and delivery of projects forward at pace? Then join Shelter as a Learning & Organisational Development Apprenticeships & Projects Specialist and you could soon be playing a pivotal role in bringing to life Shelter’s people development priorities.

About Shelter

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.

We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the team

The Equity, Inclusion and Culture Directorate (EIC) is a newly formed directorate at Shelter. There are two main functions - Equity and Diversity (ED) and Organisation Development, Learning and Engagement (ODLE), where this position sits. The ODLE team is responsible for developing the organisational capability and structures to drive change and creating the culture we need to achieve our goals. Our focus is on working in partnership with leaders to achieve Shelter’s strategic goals. We also champion and develop Shelter leaders, help the organisation identify, design and deliver change well and drive and embody the culture of trust, fearlessness, compassion and inclusion.

About the role

The projects you’ll be focused on are Apprenticeships and a Mentoring Programme. Regarding Apprenticeships, we recognise that we need to use the Apprenticeship levy in a more effective way. Not only from a financial perspective, but more importantly, in relation to growing our talent and attracting new, diverse talent. Some groundwork has already been done, but we need someone to test our assumptions, create, trial and launch our apprenticeships approach, or be able to recommend alternatives that are in alignment with our strategic goals.

As far as the Mentoring Programme is concerned, it forms part of an overall aspiration to develop leadership capacity at all levels. It also links in strategically with our anti-racism plan. The various objectives of the programme include giving employees the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge under the guidance of a mentor and providing reverse mentoring opportunities for more junior employees to mentor senior colleagues in various topical and strategic areas. In order to get mentoring off the ground though, the programme needs designing and coordinating, which is where you come in. In short, this is an interesting and varied role that will often involve working under your own initiative, but also with the support of the Head of OD&L, OD&L Consultants and the wider Learning team.

We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.

About you

To succeed, you’ll need to be confident working with all levels of an organisation, building relationships and becoming a trusted colleague to key stakeholders.

Ideally, you can also bring experience in managing projects within an L&D/OD/HR or EDI capacity. We will, however, be flexible for the right candidate who either has strong planning and prioritisation skills within an L&D/OD/HR background or strong project management/planning experience gained within other organisational remits. Comfortable engaging with colleagues, listening and taking on board feedback, you also have a flair for using your expertise to influence key decisions.

Put simply, you have what it takes to apply your skills and knowledge to ensure Shelter can meet its strategic goals and outcomes and deliver on our purpose of defending the right to a safe home.

Benefits

We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
