Job description

About us

More than half the UK working population rely on The Pensions Regulator (TPR) to regulate their retirement savings, we protect more than £2trn of savings for in excess of 30 million people.

This is an exciting time for TPR.  The pensions sector is at a pivotal moment - whilst most pensions assets are still in defined benefit schemes, after the success of automatic enrolment most pension savers are now within defined contribution schemes. This constitutes a major shift in focus across TPR.  Across this landscape our key priorities are to:

  • protect savers money by making schemes and employers comply with their duties;
  • enhance the system through effective Market Oversight, influencing better practices;
  • support innovation in savers interests so that new products and services deliver good outcomes.

We have a proven track record of successfully implementing, anticipating, and adapting to changes in the complex pensions landscape here at TPR. The challenge now is to move forward and ensure that DB pension savers continue to get their promised benefits, and DC savers get value for money for their pension savings pot, whilst supporting innovation in the interests of all pensions savers.

The evolution of TPR means we will see a move to being a more proactive and influential regulator, with effective Market Oversight and a greater focus on innovation underpinned by strong data and digital capability and making our focus on regulatory compliance ever more effective and efficient.

About the role

The Executive Director, Market Oversight will oversee pensions schemes in the UK, mitigating any risks building within them, and risks that might impact UK financial stability, as well as enhancing outcomes for savers by raising standards of trusteeships and ensuring schemes deliver value for money for savers.

This role will provide an opportunity to horizon-scan the whole industry, identifying dynamics and emerging trends. Through multidisciplinary teams, this senior leadership position is also responsible for driving strategic initiatives to enhance collaboration, communication, and partnerships with pension scheme trustees, employers, industry bodies, financial regulators and other key stakeholders. The primary objective is to ensure the protection and security of pension savers' interests through proactive engagement, influencing and the fostering of a cooperative and transparent environment within the pension industry.

The role sits on both the corporate Board and Executive Committee, reporting directly into the CEO.

About you

You will be credible at the most senior levels, with extensive experience in stakeholder management and relationship building. A background in financial services would be preferable, with an understanding of the complexities of a regulated industry. You will have a strong understanding and interest in investment management, industry dynamics, and emerging trends.

We are looking for someone with a proven track record of effective stakeholder management at the most senior levels, and of driving effective collaboration and partnership initiatives – bringing innovative approaches in order to benefit your sector and customers.

You will be a passionate and proven leader – able to inspire and motivate teams to achieve a common goal, with the change management expertise to implement successful organisational change.

If you want to make a difference to the livelihood of tens of millions of people, we would love to hear from you.

We are an inclusive employer and offer equal opportunities regardless of an individual’s age, disability, gender identity, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.
