Job Introduction

This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. To apply for this role you should identify as deaf, disabled or neurodivergent and must meet either: the definition of disability in the Equality Act (2010), or the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) if applying in Northern Ireland. You’re broadly defined as disabled under both acts if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative or adverse effect on your ability to do normal daily activities. This definition includes both apparent and non-apparent conditions and impairments, and medical conditions such as Cancer, HIV or Multiple Sclerosis.

We are committed to making the process of applying for this role as accessible as possible. If you need to discuss adjustments or access requirements for the application process, or have any questions about our Extend programme, please contact the BBC Extend team via the shared mailbox.

The BBC are fully committed to providing workplace adjustments to help eliminate barriers in the workplace that disabled people face. To do this, we have our own dedicated BBC Access and Disability Service that provides assessments and support throughout employment with us. If you are successful in applying for this role and require workplace adjustments, we will work with you to get your adjustments in place.

BBC Scotland’s news division is undergoing an exciting transformation as it continues to put audiences at the heart of its journalism. As part of that commitment we are developing new TV news brands – including a new nightly programme on the BBC Scotland channel and a multiplatform podcast brand. At the heart of everything we do is BBC One’s award-winning primetime news programme Reporting Scotland and its bulletins from early morning through to late evening.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone to take on the role of production journalist in that TV News team. On Reporting Scotland you will be producing a range of bulletins and providing support, as you build towards contributing to our flagship 1830 bulletin.

As the other TV News brands take shape we’ll look for your creative ideas to make those distinctive and relevant to audiences. As well as being trusted and respected for hard hitting journalism, we like to have fun, be creative, and look for quirky stories which will have our audience talking. We put impartiality at the heart of everything we do and we’re looking for someone who values this critical part of the BBC’s mission.

This role will provide a huge amount of opportunity to develop your TV production skills and to work with an experienced team of journalists who lead the agenda in Scottish news every day.

This role involves some weekend working, on a rotation basis.

Main Responsibilities

  • Prepare and produce TV news bulletins and other content.
  • Work closely with reporters and correspondents to produce journalism to the highest standard, making key editorial decisions in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Make confident decisions under time pressure, knowing when to seek editorial and legal advice.
  • Use desktop editing, scripting software and other technology to bring our stories to life.
  • Develop strong relationships with the wider BBC Scotland news team.

Are you the right candidate?

  • You’ll understand the BBC’s duty to ‘pursue truth with no agenda’ and be ready to demonstrate this every day with the decisions you make in your journalism.
  • You will be ready to produce distinctive and agenda–leading news programmes with first-class writing that helps our audiences understand complex issues.
  • You will be ready to take on the technical side of making television - with training learning to edit video content at your desktop and to work with our gallery systems.
  • Above all you’ll be able to demonstrate a high level of understanding of Scottish news and society and be equally confident to deliver the news as part of either our small out-of-hours team or to contribute to much larger editorial discussions in our newsroom. You’ll be confident booking guests who represent Scotland and bring our stories to life for existing and new BBC Scotland news audiences.

About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.

We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
