Our opportunity
Are you looking for a new challenge? Would you like an opportunity to develop your firmware design skills in a close-knit, dynamic team environment? Thales OME delivers a range of state-of-the-art solutions for some of the most technically advanced defence and security platforms in the world, and we're seeking talented engineers who can apply their knowledge and skills in a firmware role.
This role is a development role, intended to give an engineer with some existing design experience the opportunity to build their technical skills, widen their exposure to different aspects of the design lifecycle, and learn about complex defence products in more detail. The role will cover all aspects of the product lifecycle, from concept studies, requirements, selection of technology, design and development, integration, validation and qualification.

About the role:
The engineer would be responsible for the design and development of firmware for FPGAs in close collaboration with the Systems, Electronics and Software teams.
Key responsibilities:
The role will involve the following activities:
  • Designing firmware using VHDL or High-Level Synthesis Languages
  • Verifying firmware using VHDL or Hardware Verification Languages
  • Writing and reviewing design documentation
  • Preparing for and participate in peer reviews and project design reviews
  • Engage with a multi-disciplinary team across the project (systems, electronics, software, safety, etc.) to develop an optimum solution
  • Work collaboratively with the project team to ensure products meet all requirements
  • Contribute to the development of the wider firmware team, including proposing and implementing improvements, participating in peer reviews and sharing knowledge and good practice across the team
  • Providing support to integration, debugging and system level testing
  • Reporting progress of work against cost, schedule and performance

Projects involve using the latest industry-class development tools for FPGA and System-on-Chip hardware technologies. Work is carried out to a structured firmware design process.
Skills and Experience:
Demonstrated experience of firmware design roles including at least a subset of the following
  • Degree in Electronics or Software engineering
  • Experience in development of firmware/digital design in VHDL or Verilog
  • Experience in verification of firmware designs using VHDL or SystemVerilog
  • Analysis of firmware requirements and developing code to meet those requirements
  • Familiarity with Xilinx / Intel (Altera) / Microsemi (Actel) design flow and third-party synthesis tools
  • Debugging of firmware designs and supporting integration and test at hardware level
  • Ability to manage own tasks and technical activities as a technical lead for an engineering manager
  • Experience in writing technical reports/ documentation
  • The role requires a SC clearance
