Job description

Donation Centre Supervisor (known internally as Donation Centre Deputy Manager)

This role is based on-site in our Yorkshire Cancer Research Centre, Harrogate.

We are committed to paying the Real Living Wage.

About Us

Yorkshire is one of the regions hardest hit by cancer. Together, we can change this.

Yorkshire Cancer Research is a charity dedicated to funding research so that you and those you love live longer healthier lives, free of cancer.

Thanks to supporters, the charity funds vital cancer research and pioneers innovative new services for people with cancer. These life-giving medical breakthroughs are helping more people survive cancer – in Yorkshire, and beyond.

As an inclusive employer, our aim is to ensure our workforce reflects the rich diversity of our region. We believe a diverse workforce is vital to us taking action to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer more effectively in Yorkshire. We offer equal opportunities regardless of race, religion or belief, age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, marriage and civil partnerships.

The Benefits

We offer all employees a wide range of benefits including an enhanced contributory pension scheme, 25 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays (increasing to 30 days after 5 years’ service), flexible working arrangements, private medical insurance, enhanced maternity leave, career progression, learning and development, wellbeing initiatives, offices within walking distance of Hornbeam Park train station, free onsite parking and a whole lot more.

We’ve got a strong set of values that inform everything we do and we’re looking for people who are aligned with these. As our Donation Centre Supervisor, you will put people in Yorkshire at the heart of everything you do, unite with colleagues and other organisations in this cause, and dare to think big and bold to make positive solutions happen.

To find out more about our values and how important they are to us, please visit our website and view the role profile for this position.

The Role

As our Donation Centre Supervisor, you will lead by example and your hard work and commitment will be essential to ensure that donations received are efficiently processed and delivered to our network of shops to ensure that we can raise the funds needed to invest in bringing vital cancer research and expertise to Yorkshire.

You will be responsible for stock control and movement, and you will help with organising Van Drivers to prepare collections and deliveries, whilst working in a way that reduces the risk of injury and damage to all areas of the business, in accordance with all safety regulations. You will also be expected to foster a culture of safety and well-being within the Donation Centre.

You will support the Donation Centre Manager and share responsibility for all stock-related processes including storage and distribution, supporting the management of the volunteer team and weekly logistics, ensuring that current retail trends are capitalised on through all outlets and channels.

Providing exceptional customer service is crucial in boosting our income, as is the efficient sorting and distribution of donations across our shop network. The role can be demanding, but the variety ensures that no two days are alike. The rewarding aspect of this role lies in the knowledge that your efforts contribute to funding vital research that saves lives.

Specifically, you will:

• Support the Donation Centre Manager in managing the daily running of the Donation Centre, maintaining policies and procedures with Retail teams.

• Support the Donation Centre Manager in planning and administering the weekly logistics, to ensure stock is collected and delivered to the network of shops, and to plan for collections from donors’ homes.

• Take responsibility for all products in the Donation Centre, ensuring they are sorted, stored, and selected appropriately to maximise profits.

• Work with the Donation Centre Manager to ensure donated goods are distributed equally, considering style of shop, location and demography, to maximise profit for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

• Work with Donation Centre Manager to ensure all retail channels are well stocked at all times and ensure that current trends are capitalised on through all outlets and channels.

• Ensure that the logistics of goods are handled to ensure clear sorting, storage and delivery to retail outlets.

• Support management of the volunteer rota on a weekly basis to ensure the Donation Centre is fully operational during opening hours.

• Support management of Donation Centre volunteers. This will include recruiting, inducting, managing, motivating, and training to ensure a positive working environment.

• Help create a welcoming professional atmosphere and deliver high standards of customer service for all donors, customers and supporters.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will need:

• To be ideally educated to GCSE or equivalent.

• Previous experience in a warehouse or distribution role would be an advantage, ideally within a retail or charity environment.

• To have commercial awareness to help build and drive sales coupled with the determination and motivation to help build and drive our retail distribution network.

• Knowledge and experience of effective stock rotation and management ideally.

• To have good time management skills and the ability to prioritise your own workload to meet deadlines.

• To have the ability to lead volunteers, providing support, motivation and encouragement.

• To be resilient and adaptable to change.

• To have demonstrably strong planning, guiding and motivation skills to successfully achieve targeted income is desirable.
