Job description

About the role

As a Full-Stack PHP Developer you'll be comfortable working on both Front-End and Back-End systems. Whilst not a design role, UI and UX play a big part in our customer's perception of what we do, so you'll be aware of best practices and always have an eye on the end-user experience.
Reporting to the Development Manager, you'll be working in an agile environment alongside Product Management ensuring that both features and bugs are addressed in a timely manner. You'll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and be able to balance fast delivery with quality, clean, properly documented and well-tested code. You'll have a willingness to learn new skills and contribute to continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Writing clean, meaningful code with good documentation.
  • Working collaboratively with the rest of the Development, Product and Customer Services teams.
  • Maintaining and developing new features whilst improving existing code where required.
  • Having an appreciation for UX / UI when developing, taking into account all browser types and devices.
  • Considering information security protocols and good practice relating to secure code development and secure working practices.
  • Rapidly addressing issues and fixing defects discovered during deployment.
  • Occasionally assisting the Junior Developers.
  • Owning and updating assigned JIRA cases.
  • Keeping up-to-date with the latest industry trends and best practices.
  • Gaining an understanding of application from the customers perspective / use cases and keeping up-to-date with our product updates.
  • Taking responsibility for your own training needs and discussing these needs with the Development Manager.

Skills & experience

You'll have excellent written and verbal communication skills - you'll be expected to work closely as a team with colleagues working both in the office and remotely, as well as keeping the Development Manager up to date on progress. You'll have an eye for detail with great pride taken in your work. You'll also have the ability to build relationships at different levels across the business and communicate in a non-technical way with those from non-technical backgrounds.
The main technical skills we are looking for are:
  • PHP (5.x and 7.x) including Laravel.
  • Javascript and jQuery.
  • React JS or Vue JS.
  • MySQL (including knowledge on indexes and optimising queries).
  • HTML 5 and CSS.
  • Object-orientated programming.
  • API development and integrations.
  • Version control (Git preferred).
  • Package management such as Composer.
In addition, the following skills would be desirable but not essential:
  • Operating Linux web servers (LAMP and nGinx).
  • SASS / LESS / SCSS.
  • webpack.
  • NPM.
  • An understanding of UX / UI.
  • Experience of mobile app development.
  • DevOps.
