At Community Transport we provide accessible transport for people with mobility or other health issues, helping them to reach services and connect with others. Supporting us to do this and generate income, we sell donated items of furniture. The Role
The Retail Manager will be based in Byker, Newcastle with regular travel within the region, to other sites. You will work closely with the Operations Director North in managing day to day operations, delivering r an efficient and effective Furniture Retailing operation across the Northeast region, ensuring that staff teams at each retail site are given high levels of leadership, support, encouragement, and clarity in order to help them to achieve results.
The Retail Manager will represent Community Transport to a high standard and embody the charity’s core values, whilst making a difference to the lives of people in the local community.
The role is based on 37 hours per week, five days of seven and so includes weekend working by rotation.
Key responsibilities
- You will lead the day-to-day operation of retail premises across the Northeast region, visiting each premises regularly each week to meet with the relevant supervisor to review financial performance and address any concerns, complaints, HR issues, stock shortages, site problems, utilities, volunteers and trainees
- You will motivate, lead, support and performance manage the team of retail supervisors in the Northeast to achieve the financial targets for donated sales, bought-in-goods income and Gift Aid revenues. You will have a passion and a proven track record of achieving and maintaining excellent sales figures

- You will support the Operations Director to set out plans for growth at retail sites across the Northeast. This will include developing, reviewing, and evaluating performance of retail sites and your team regularly against plans, targets and budgets and take agreed action to optimise efficiency and effectiveness, driving customer service. n
- You will support the Operations Director to develop and deliver a consistent, targeted and cost-effective marketing strategy for the retail operations across the West Midlands.. n
- You ensure all HR practice across retail sites is in line with the Charity’s policies and rules, and in accordance with employment law and external advice. You will work with colleagues across at other sites in the recruitment of staff, volunteers, and trainees, to include liaison with appropriate agencies, and to ensure that full inductions and training needs are completed and recorded in line with the charities policies. This will include work with external agencies such as Job Centre Plus and a variety of training providers to resource each site with a range of volunteers and work placements in various roles. n
- You will work with the Transport Manager to ensure the maintenance, repair and roadworthiness of goods vans based at the shop always comply with statutory regulations and the Charity’s own requirements. You will ensure all vehicle checks are completed and any defects are reported, actioned and all relevant paperwork is stored appropriately. n
- You will use your merchandising knowledge to ensure retail displays across all retail sites are updated on a daily basis to maximise customer interest, you will also work with furniture staff and volunteers to display items in a way that demonstrates good practice in relation to safety. You will also ensure sufficient stock levels are maintained and sales trends are monitored. n
- You will nurture, train, develop and motivate staff and volunteers to set, monitor and maintain social media and website activity, achieving daily advert targets. You will have good knowledge of various social media platforms, Facebook, Gumtree, Marketplace etc, and upload items for sale on the CT Furniture website shop. n
- You will ensure that each site is clean, safe and secure, carrying out regular site audits and requiring regular checks from your fire marshal, first aider and H&S representative including ensuring that all weekly, monthly and annual safety and fire checks, are completed across all retail sites as required. n
- You will undertake any other duties to ensure your team and organisational objectives are achieved. This will include covering staff absence at retail sites across the Northeast as required to ensure the safe and consistent running of Furniture Retail premises in line with the Charity’s policies, procedures and controls n
- Health and Safety plays a major part in the day-to-day operation of Community Transport, and as a Retail Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day health and safety and therefore, ensuring the building is safe for staff, volunteers, placements and customers to trade and work daily. You will ensure that health and safety folders are kept up to date, as and when new documents are issued, such as: COSHH, Legislation, Accident, Fire documents, First aid book.

- Established product knowledge n
- Experience of retail sales in a pressurised performance-related environment n
- Excellent customer service skills n

- Experience of merchandising for maximum sales impact n
- Experience of selling online/social media sales platforms n
- Experience of premises management n
- Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of media and methods n
- Knowledge and understanding of performance management and quality assurance system n
- Ability to resolve issues and make key decisions with the minimum supervision n
- Proficient in using ICT systems including EPOS n
