Global Executive Medical Director, Ophthalmology

About This Job:

With the recent integration of Iveric at Astellas we have a new global leadership opportunity for an Executive Medical Director – Core Medical Team Lead (CMT) for Ophthalmology. This sits as part of the Global Medical Affairs (GMA) team and reports to the VP GMA Ophthalmics and Gene Therapy.

In this role, you will be globally accountable for Medical Affairs (MA) activities in the Ophthalmology Therapy Area for products pre and post-launch. You will lead the CMT and facilitate collaboration across our matrix organization to ensure the creation and execution of the Core Medical Plan (CMP).

The CMP includes MA-sponsored data generation (including HEOR) that addresses existing and future data gaps and supports reimbursement needs, a Publication Plan, Medical Tools, and other MA tactics. Additionally, you will also hold responsibility for leading, presenting, and defending routine/ad-hoc assessments of the benefits /risk of assigned products.

In this leadership position, you will represent the CMT perspective in senior leadership meetings across the organization, interact with Commercial Strategy, and lead the creation and execution of an integrated Global Brand plan.

Key Activities for this role are noted below:

  • Accountable for the development and execution of the Core Medical Plan for Ophthalmology, providing external medical and business environment perspectives/therapy knowledge in the development of CMPs, business plans and Phase 3 Clinical Development Plans.
  • Ensure alignment with HTA and Access needs globally and partner with HEOR to develop plans for addressing gaps, ensuring Core Value Dossiers are provided in a timely manner
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of Therapy Area and acts as internal expert for
  • Ophthalmology. Builds/maintains relationships with global experts, obtaining key scientific
  • insights to support the Therapy Area. Contribute to regulatory strategies internally and
  • externally.
  • Apply strategic thinking beyond CMT related activities and provide leadership in wider issues for innovation and process optimization, including collaboration with commercial
  • Provide expertise to key internal and external leaders, and consult on leading projects and initiatives for Ophthalmology and beyond

Essential Knowledge & Experience:

  • Significant experience in regional or global medical affairs, with solid knowledge of Ophthalmology
  • Able to evidence success in leading cross-regional and cross-functional matrix teams either within Medical Affairs or clinical development, able to influence without direct authority and deploy advanced problem-solving skills
  • Experience of managing large Medical Affairs budgets with demonstrated ability to apply pro-active risk management on budget and timelines.
  • Advanced understanding of Pharma regulations and procedures, particularly global regulatory bodies such as FDA, EMA, PMDA, ACCME and OIG.
  • Fluent in written and verbal business English with strong communication and presentation skills

Education/Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree (MD) or equivalent.

Additional information:

  • This is a permanent, full-time position that is primarily based in the UK or EU4 major markets
  • The position follows our hybrid working. Role requires a blend of home and a minimum 1-day per quarter in our Addlestone office. Flexibility may be required in line with business needs. Candidates should be located within a commutable distance of the office.
