Salary: £93,666 to £126,281 per annum, pro rata

The Role

 

The position of GP Teaching and Research Fellow (TEL) is part time, 0.4 FTE.


This is a one year post (with the possibility of a second year if funding available) for a GP or GP Trainee to either develop a doctorate proposal or complete their doctorate degree in educational research linked to the MBBS programme.

 

We would expect the successful candidate to either have submitted a funding application for an MD or PhD during the time of the post, or to complete their MD/PhD if already started.  

 

You will join an enthusiastic and vibrant group of GP Educational Researchers at this exciting time of expansion of GP undergraduate teaching at Newcastle University. 

 

There will be financial support of course fees and other development needs.

 

You will join the educational research team and GP Teaching Fellows at the School of Medicine led by Professor Hugh Alberti (Sub-dean for Primary and Community Care).

Key Accountabilities

You will either:

  • Develop an educational research project including submitting a proposal for funding for a doctorate degree

     or

  • Be currently undertaking a doctorate degree with satisfactory progress

 

  • The project must be directly related to the MBBS programme

In addition, the role may include:

  • Linking with and supporting other doctorate students within the School of Medicine
  • Supporting the work of the Medical Education Research Group
  • Delivering teaching to medical students based at the Medical School and/or within GP Practices
  • More broadly be involved in other aspects of education such as exam marking, case writing, etc

Specific tasks will include:

  • To manage own teaching, scholarly and administrative activities
  • To teach as a member of the team
  • Carrying out teaching within a clear and established programme
  • Developing own teaching materials
  • Contributing to decisions affecting the work of the primary care team
  • Outside of this posts sessions, it is expected that the candidate will be undertaking relevant clinical work (whether this be locum, salaried or a partner post) or be undertaking GP specialty training

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Knowledge of the MBBS curriculum
  • Current registration with the GMC and licence to practice
  • Evidence of interest in teaching
  • MRCGP or working towards the MRCGP (i.e. GP specialty trainee)

Desirable

  • Evidence of experience in teaching
  • Aspiration to develop as a clinical academic
  • Evidence of research experience

 

Attributes and Behaviour

  • Good team working skills and ability to collaborate with other disciplines
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective organisational skills
  • Current registration with the GMC and licence to practice
  • Evidence of interest in teaching and research
  • Undergoing or completed GP vocational training

 

Qualifications 

  • Holds an MBBS degree or equivalent
  • Medical degree

Desirable

  • Possesses a further teaching qualification, such as the Certificate in Medical Education, a Trainer’s qualification, or a further degree
