Job description

About us

National Grid is at the heart of the energy future, and our people are at the heart of National Grid. We’re 30,000 colleagues strong. In the UK, National Grid don’t generate or sell energy – we join the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning, to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

The world of energy is changing beyond recognition as we focus on building a cleaner, greener future. Working at National Grid, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in the UK – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Our values and principles

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of who we are and what we do. Our commitment to these values is unwavering and they are central to our mission. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries and we are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments that you require.

About the role

Innovation, Development and Delivery (IDD) is the transition to a low-carbon economy is one of the defining issues of the 21st century. Rapid progress towards clean, low carbon energy is needed to meet the global ambition to limit warming to below 2°C, and pursue efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Hence, we need to be bold, ambitious, and innovative in developing new engineering and wider system solutions to these challenges. The current thinking isn’t going to do this. Through transformational engineering – the solutions we develop and implement – we will help Great Britain (and consequentially the world) to achieve its green targets.

You will have the opportunity to work within IDD as a Power System Engineer. We shape the contract strategy and support the project and procurement throughout the market engagement process so that the development of strategically important, complex projects is contractually and commercially viable. By doing this we enable IDD to deliver the right projects at the right time to benefit society and enable the move to Net Zero.

We need your help to answer some of the biggest questions National Grid is facing:

  • How do we make sure we’re building the right infrastructure, at the right price, with the right level of risk, to get to net zero as quickly as possible?
  • How do we make sure we have assurance and KPI’s in place that support execution of the contracts?
  • How do we make sure that everything we do is as sustainable as possible?
  • How do we decide the route and timing of market engagement?
  • How do we evaluate and negotiate our tenders whilst building robust estimates to support the project forecast?
  • What new ways of working do we want to implement to make sure we can deliver these projects faster?
  • How do we leverage new digital solutions, automation and AI to work more effectively?

You will be advising the project teams on risk, contract terms and cost effectiveness as well as benchmarking cost information to support Estimates to Completion. You will be engaging with subject matter experts to learn more about the risks they need supported in relation to their contracts and budget. You will also be leading Contract Review Meetings whilst monitoring and reporting contract performance. You’ll be completing Contract Management elements such as attending tender events, certifying payment applications, evaluating change and drafting on behalf of the project as well as helping to improve our digital tools and processes.

What you'll need

You'll need to achieve a 2.1 degree; however it doesn’t matter when you got this or if you are currently working towards it. We just need you to be eager to apply your knowledge in a real-world setting. Your degree would ideally be in Quantity Surveying, Procurement, Mathematics or Science to gain a rapid understanding of the works being discussed.

Flexibility to travel and/or work unsupervised will be required on occasion throughout the placement.

Due to the amount of travel to our site locations, you’ll need to have a valid full UK Driving License.

We care about your wellbeing and want you to get the best out of your working environment, so our future for office-based teams is hybrid. Hybrid working is a mix between home and office working. Flexibility is the key, what’s important is that it meets the needs of the colleague and the business, and that you agree the best approach for you and your team with your manager.

Application Deadline

We recruit on a rolling basis and reserve the right to close our vacancies once we have enough applications. We encourage you to apply as early as possible to ensure you obtain the place you want in the application process.

Assessment centres will be held from December 2023 onwards.

What you'll get

We are proud to offer a starting salary of £33,154 (Bachelor’s) or £34,300 (Master’s).
